Yes 12th Dan, you cynical lot. You have to remember that in Eastern countries you are said to be one year old when you are born so the first Dan grade you have is a 'given' which makes 11th Dan the actual 'graded level' you can attain. Also people in Japan live longer so one of their years is equivalent to about 18months in the Western time scale, thus 11th Dan in the East would be impossible to attain in the West because of the angle of inclination of the Earth upon its axis and they type of food we eat (bata kusai). Its really very simple and explained fully in once you send these Grandiest Dandiest Master a joining fee of several hundred pieces of gold (currency is 'vulgar' to them) and accept them as your 'new god'. But most of you won't understand for a long time yet so just keep practising and doing what your Grandiest Dandiest Master says (via correspondence course) and pay to join their governing body and attend every seminar they run. Never question them, its rude and disloyal and shows you haven't 'understood'.
Kokoro777 13th Dan (13th because I'm fat-another thing you have to factor in to the equation-look at the photos of them if you don't believe me)

Here's an interesting point though. At which point do you start taking them seriously? There are many schools of Karate for example and at first they must've been ridiculed by the schools they splintered from. When and how did, say, Wado Ryu for example gain its legitimacy and from whom? Didn't they just set up on themselves, get an association going, dojos affiliated to them, enter a few competitions etc? A martial art set up by a film star immigrant from Hong Kong or something and it being a fusion of Tai Chi Chuan, Wing Chung Pa Gua etc. How they must've lauged but it became Jeet Kune Do and the founder, Bruce Lee! Who says Seitei Iai with its non-practical techniques stolen and sanitised from Koryu is 'kosher'? The people running the association and taking our money for doing their courses, affiliating our dojo to them and paying £40 for a certificate? When does a 'new system' become legitimate?

I suspect the answer will vary from case to case. Wado Ryu, for example, was started by Otsuka, a senior student of Funakoshi, who is widely considered to be the founder of modern karate. When Otsuka went out on his own he already had a substantial reputation, so his school had credibility right from the start.

I see what you're saying but it seems that if enough people agree that something is legitimate then the rest of us simply nod our heads and accept it. Perhaps that's what these guys are trying to do by using phrases such as 'world renowned', 'respected by many' etc. Perhaps when a critical mass of people nod their heads, it becomes 'legitimate'.
(I should add that I trained in Wado for many years and hold it in high regards. I even trained with Ohtsuka Sensei a couple of times but I have to say some of his technique was eyebrow raising....)

I see what you're saying but it seems that if enough people agree that something is legitimate then the rest of us simply nod our heads and accept it.
I think that is basically the right definition. It's legitimate if it's recognized to be legitimate by the people who matter. In this context, that's just general belief (as opposed to, say, tax exempt status where the only opinion that really matters is the government's).
To a certain group of people, kendo is "illegitimate" because of its lack of real-world practicality and effectiveness. So happens that they themselves are considered by many to be "illegitimate" due to lack of history and time-tested technique.
There is a lot of commonly accepted knowledge that is simply wrong, but still accepted as true because of the weight of the number of people that believe it.

Cheesecakes are deadly. A proper New York cheesecake will crack pavement if dropped from waist height, due to its inherent calorific density. Imagine what it could do if applied with force. However the most lethal technique is to make one and offer your enemies a piece, who after consuming it will expire from instantly clogged arteries. Mock at your peril.

Reiver - New York cheesecake sounds nasty... but nothing beats my "white chocolate cherry shortbread cheesecake". The first time I made it, I put my finger in the blender and accidentally turned it on (Im not joking - I actually did that. The same hand I put the drillbit through). I ran around the house in a panic with a teatowel wrapped around my hand, thinking Id chopped half my finger off. Turns out I only gave it a very deep cut, cleaned up the blood in the kitchen, and finished the cheesecake.
It was delicious.

But that just enforces my idea that The Kitchen it’s a very treacherous ground full of traps and deadly enemies…one step in the wrong direction and kabummmm…you’re done for. :scared:
What level of expertise do you have to have in order to master the path of the Bloody Cheesecake ?... (Chīzukēki -Do sounds deadly)

it was one of those handheld blenders. I stuck my finger in between the blades at the end to pull out a piece of biscuit base that was stuck in there, and my other hand accidentally pushed the on switch. Voila, one mangled finger.
To take this path you only need to have expertise as a "good eater" (Aussie for "willing to eat anything in vast quantities"). You will spend the first 6 months of this art perfecting the wax-on wax-off technique through beating egg whites. If you master that you get a belt.

To take this path you only need to have expertise as a "good eater" (Aussie for "willing to eat anything in vast quantities"). You will spend the first 6 months of this art perfecting the wax-on wax-off technique through beating egg whites. If you master that you get a belt.
first rule of tool usage: pull the plug before putting your hand it in. (be it electrical or spark)
