this wide obi is called kaku obi, right? so, is anyone wearing it? it looks like it is used primerely in iaido today, but this kendoka uses it in kendo and i found at some sites that it is more traditional in kendo to use this obi.

Both iaidoka in my dojo wear the obi (the striped one in your link, right?) during kendo practise. Both have said that it encourages/provides feedback to the use of the tanden (lower abdomen) during kendo.
Use of the obi is optional in kendo unless your sensei asks for it.

What's with the Men picture at the bottom? Can you read Japanese phrase there? Are they actually advocating an air-pocket on top of your head?

My Japanese sucks more than my kendo, but I think the first sentence (#30) roughly translates as "to make your men look beautiful, the tenugui ends should not be sticking out."
That's not bad dating advice either, come to think of it. :confused2

My former Kendo & Iaido instructor would say that the Obi provides the "foundation" on which one adds the Hakama to. In formal Japanese dress for men, an Obi is worn under the Hakama as well.
FWIW.
