Are there any Kendo computer/video games out there? The only one I know about is called Budokan (old PC DOS game, I have played it on a Commodore 64 as well), but it's not a pure Kendo game as there are other martial arts in it too (Karate, Nunchaku and Bo). But are there any others? And newer ones? This game was released around 1991 or something so it's getting a bit old by now.

Budokan was bad.... Even for C64.
The only game i've ever come across that vaguely resembles kendo is 'Kengo' for the PS2. It's came out a while ago, did really badly therefore went out of print pretty quickly so it's not the easiest game to find in stores but, you should be able to get it from somewhere like Amazon or Ebay. There's a sequel to it too but I think it's more storyline/ RPG based rather than hacking the hell out of your opponent.
Another one is 'Way of the Samurai' which is a sort of action/adventure beat 'em up, again for PS2.

There's hints of Kendo in a lot of beat 'em ups but as far as I know, there aren't any 'Kendo' games. If there is, they're probably older arcade games & not released outside of Japan.

Its kinda strange that there hasent been a real good kendo game for PS2 or Nintendo , with Japan being so big on Kendo and game stations .

All Japan Kendo Champ stadiums , crowd , nice angle of view , 1player or 2. Famous Kendokas , realistic game control , combo hits . regular rules
Beat the game once and you get Naginata =)

Id pay it \'o)

it wouldnt work... you couldnt do really stupid flashy moves without getting beaten to death....hmmm... which button should I press, kote, men or do...along with move and debana etc... I reckon it would be difficult to do. You'd need quite a lot of different key combos, so maybe a super move would be a katate strike from jodan....

Well... they did Bushido Blade pretty well for the playstation. There wasn't any so-called combo moves but it had jodan, chudan and the stuff. It would just be a matter of modifying the gameplay and adding in or Kendo moves then katana stuff.

well with combo moves i ment like "kote , men " ( dont know the termanoligy for that move) , dident mean kote supersult backflip split tsuki =)

You could have all the styles in one of the L / R buttons , so you could switch in the shiai , or just pick one style in the profile making of your kendoka

4 attack areas , 4 buttons ( PS2 ) , push forward for forward , push forward fast ( double tap ) would be a fast kendo step ( same for backwards or anyother direction )

So a attack could be like , first forward abit , then double forward for the attack step and then kote button , and then quick men button ,

or a special button combo for the moves , worked in other games , and it would make it harder for combos , no flashy stuff , realistik

Just a quick follow up ,

Naginata could be in the game , same system , just switch shinais to naginatas .

Iaido could be in it to , just do like the dancing games , where you press the button on the right time in a combo , hit the right button at the right time , if you make a mistake you loose points , the 12 regular Katas , and when you get them all right could open up other katas ,

Same with Jodo

You could have a ki ken tai no ichi rule where you have to hit a button to make it more difficult. That would be a butt in shiai. Have several difficulties with more difficult judging and higher kendo rank/skill. Unlock Nito ryu-I think it would be an awesome game. But to look at it from a regular persons view, they would miss the flashy stuff. Thats why 30% of beginers quit. Then again, it would just encourage kendoka to sit at home and miss practice. lol

yes but it shouldn't be like other fighting games where you press buttons and the guy just does the move, I think you should have to do the moves with the right timing and distance just like real kendo.

e.g. press different button presses for short or long distance fumikomi, timing the strike button presses so they hit same time as foot stamps so it's like ki ken tai ichi (heck hook up a headset (like in manhunt) and we can do the ki part as well :P).

That would make it damn hard to get good at, but altogether more fun methinks.

Also you should have to earn things like jodan and eventually nito mode as well. A campaign create a kendoka style mode would be good too (i.e. compete in regional taikai, get selected for squad, fight in worlds for whichever country, like in fifa games). Where you have to practice different skills in fighting/training to be able to use them. And you could use grading as a kind of rpg style lvling up for your character.

And of course you'd be able to dress up your kendoka in whatever interesting armour and keikogi/hakama designs you like. You'd be able to get different types of armour with...money you earn from sponsorship or something. And you could have different variety shinai to fight with, all with different features e.g. carbon fibre or bamboo, different balance or grip on the shinai all effecting the stats some way.

it'll never happen though...

or when someone is sick and can't come to training they can watch a demo fight (CPU v CPU) and analyze  or have an unlockable specials like interviews with the who's who in the kendo world (not the magazine), awsome ippon clips from past tournaments:D

me and my brother actually though about something like this and we came up with a conclusion, it won't work, plus with this kind of game you'd be saying "I could do that easily in a real shiai but whay can't I do it here!" or "so an so waza isn't that hard to do" a lot

All good ideas =)

The best would be a realistik game , diff shinais , bogus, Gi , style .

1 player , vs mode , vs mode online . story line ( like start in small competitions and the big event some all japan kendo competition ,

diffuculty level would be 4-kyu up to 8 or 10th dan

It could work , Japan has a big Kendo / naginata / iaido / jodo scene and alot of them play game stations .

I wish I was bill gates rich , id have this game out by next week lol

If they didn't want that you could do the same style of game kinda with a Samurai, of course technically that way though would make for short matches because sucessful men would be death.

You could use the analog stick to do a circle under technique to go around your opponents shinai. There could be alot of mechanics...I could imagine alot of kids waking their parents up with them screaming their Kiai at the TV.

Actually I would like to work on something like what everyone has described. Perhaps a game made not to appeal to the adverage Kendoka, but as an introduction to the art for those who would like to know more. The US Army has a 3D game to woo new recruits and it does a decent job of bringing to life the training and potential missions of a special forces soldier. Something like this could be done for Kendo also. What do you think?

in 2002 there was a game that was called Sword of the Samurai, wich was pretty good and in my opinion realistic, you had to pick a dojo and learn the technics of that school and then chalenge other schools, you had also (the main objective) to defeat other Samurai and this part was not that accurate in terms of history but it sure was fun. By the way there were no supermegakillcombo moves but a slash to the head with a live sword would kill you.
It only came out on Europe and Japan.

Here are a few ideas on what you would get in a Kendo game based on gaming trends of the moment.

1. you wouldn't be confined to a dojo. Expect to fight in an alley, on a snow-capped mountain, in a temple, on top of a moving train, in a secret military base, on a space station and in a place where everything is normal but giant sized!

2. Bogu is boring! Expect lots of flashy costumes. Expect to be able to unlock a bikini costume in the colours of your own flag! Obvously male characters would get to wear a leopard-print posing pouch.

3. Men in the game would be muscular. Women would have big la-la's and 12" waists!

4. you can play as a robot or alien!

5. Lots of Matrix style effects and the ability to somersault and run up walls.

6. Some *cough* new rules to allow for kung-fu kicks and the like!!

7. A nu-Metal soundtrack feat Limp Bizkit, Metallica and loads of other bands who all sound the same.

8. Shinai? Only on the training level!! Expect swords only and on later levels..... wait for it...wait for it..... a light-saber!!

9. A big finale involving some mutant boss dude!!

10. Secret levels where you get to 'play' recreations of scenes from Samurai movies.

Anyone still want a Kendo game?

I was in Niagara Falls last summer, and there was this game called Blade of Honor (I think). I was kind of like one of those first person shooters (Time Crisis, House Of The Dead) only you use a bladeless katana that you can use to slash at other samurai on the screen. The best part is the ridiculous faces the samurai make when you "cut" them (no ridicluous blood and gore though). It was 2 Canadian dollars well-spent!

Yeah! Red light sabres always looked a little namby-pamby LOL

Y'know... the more I think about that list I put up the more I think I'd buy a game that had all that in it!

hey I had a go at that game a while back! it's great fun! it's even better fun to stand aside and watch people try to use a katana in Chinese kung-fu (or western fencing) fashion.
