My personal opinion is that this stratification is slowly breaking down and isn't as prevalent as it once was. At least that's how it appears to me.

Perhaps succession planning isn't what it once was?

I think it's hard for them...from doing Kendo & being around Americans of Asian & Japanese descent, I can see their inner struggle. Many of them are caught between their parents or grandparent's original culture & between American Society. For example, many Asian Nations have an Emphasis on society; however, The U.S. has an Emphasis on individuality. This can cause quite a bit of conflict in generations born under Immigrant parents. The most interesting things is I can see it in my own family: my wife being born and raised in Japan from the late 60's while my kids are born here in the late 90's of the USA.

I can also see this in Patients in which the mother or father are new immigrants and barely speak english but their children are born here. I can clearly see a difference. With White or black familys that has been here for a while there isn't as much of a struggle. usually it's just a difference of the times. where mom and dad grew up where land lines were the main form of communications, but their children are living in the cell phone and Internet age.

The first generation often also don't realize the extent to which their home countries have changed.

The basic societal unit of Confucian influenced cultures (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) is the family. In the US, it is primarily the individual. This is where things start to change. As generations stay in the US the children begin to loose the sense of the family as the core unit and become more indivudialistic. Then again, a lot depends on the family and individual.
