Instead of buying a bokken or shinai, are you allowed to use a wooden katana (daito) for Kendo? I'm not 100% sure, just asking. Its possible though.. I mean.. its like a bokken.. except.. well.. actually its more like a bokken.. lol maybe it is a bokken, just a different word. Well heres a site with a daito in it, you think I'd be allwed to use this for kendo?

Hi,

This is a bokken, albeit a very cheap one. Judging from the price, I wouldn't expect it to be very high quality wood, so I would hesitate buying it and pay a few dollars more for a more traditional bokken. Besides, the black paint will most likely flake off after a few hits and might even rub off on your partner's bokken.

Assuming that you haven't even started kendo yet, I wouldn't even recommend buying a bokken until you find a dojo and ask your sensei.

Don't waste you money on a piece of junk. It would not get through the door of my Dojo.

For the safety of yourself and your partners, only buy quality equipment. For example, Seidokai Weapons (http://sdksupplies.netfirms.com/cat_stdweapons.htm) (I believe that those prices are in C$ and not US$), and Kingfisher Woodworks (http://www.kingfisherwoodworks.com/).

Also, to echo Ralutin's advise, "Ask Sensei first." If you don't have a Sensei, then wait until you do before you buy.
