you don't do Kendo?
your sensei doesn't tell you how to do kendo?
It's the same thing in a shiai and in a practice, don't be to nervous, and don't plan the fight in your head.
not only that, it's just in two months.

Hi,
Your sensei and sempai should be giving you all that you'll need to know for your first shiai. Two of the most important things to remember, though, are to do your best kendo and exude good sportsmanship. If you train hard, you should do fine and again, don't be afraid to ask your sensei and sempai any questions you may have, no matter how small.

Try to win furiously. Don't be a losing dog. If you know you can't win, don't enter.

The big thing that makes a difference is zanshin. Follow through, whether it be a good hit or a bad hit. You may get a point if your strike is marginal but you have good zanshin. Also, if you have a good strike, but you lack all zanshin and fail to follow through at all, then you will get no points at all.
Follow through, charge through your opponent like you do when you practice your basics in normal practice, and avoid tsubazeriai (sp?). It wastes time, and few people earn points from hiki waza unless it is nice and clean. Better to charge through and go at your opponent from a fresh start at issoku ito no maai rather than a messy close quarters situation.

"Don't be a losing dog. If you know you can't win, don't enter"
Thats not right thinking at all , what if your going your first match against ,oh lets say eiga (spelling ?) . He's prob one of the best and its your first match , do you realy think you can win ? . Its far better to go in with a "im gonna do my best " instinct and try to learn somthing from it , then to be pissed for days askin "how the hell did i loose"
by this motto "If you know you can't win, don't enter" it might take some time befor you actualy go a shiai .

So you enter tournaments expecting to lose? Wow. What a waste of everyone's time.

i have a shiai soon too... on the 28th... my sensei told me, not to expect to win, just go in knowing that the longer you are in there the better you are doing.. just try to stay in the field for as long as possible... i think this is a much more realistic goal than trying to win...

hi khabbi - haven't you noticed yet that yowai always wants to provoke? don't bother his posts. you would do a lot of other forum members a favour by ignoring him.

It's all based on what you have learned in the dojo. You obviously don't go to a shiai to lose, but try your best and if you lose, learn from it and improve.

Hi Gaucho,
I think the most important thing to remember is Reihou. When I did my first Shiai I stepped over the line and got a foul :D. If you understand the correct Reihou and rules of the Shiai you won't be as nervous and maybe do well. I have been reading the Japanese language 'Kendo joutatsu' book that is really good.. but I am sure there is some English language info some where.

Yeah forget what you learn, just don't step over that line!
