Got them as a present from my Grand Ma. They were 40.00 + Shipping Charge. However, she didn't know about Size difference with Shinai... I don't use size 36 Shinai ~_~;;.... So here I am wanting to see if anyone could use them? I'll pay for the shipping cost if anyone is willing to give 30.00$ for both of them (15 Per shinai + I pay the shipping). Here is a picture of both of them.

As you can see they are brand new. Still have the red string, handguard and rubber stopper packaged and protected. I honestly don't know what use I could have for them. I use size 39 and I'm six feet, so to me they are tiny. Anyone willing to help?

Why don't you save them in case you pick up nito?
Or have a couple teenaged-kids join your dojo?

Hi jjcruiser,
I totally want to learn Nito one day. Though, how would these help me? Are you supposed to use only size 36 Shinai for Nito? I know you use a short sword in one hand, not sure what size, and a long one on your opposite hand. I'm not sure what size the long sword is, but I kept guessing it was something like 37-38 if not 39....? Though, wouldn't it better if I learn Jodan first before jumping to Nito? Wouldn't it be beneficial? I started Kendo about 3 months ago, so I have a long time to go before being able to do Nito. I've asked some Senseis about it, and they all say 'Wait a few years'. So!... probably by the time I can do Nito these shinais will be old and dry. I have 5 other size 39 Shinais which I try to take care of, so adding more to the batch just wouldn't do. I would rather practice Nito with the right Shinais (6ft tall) unless size 36 is what is legally allowed?
Oh and about others joining. The only people who have joined was two guys in the past month, and one lady. No junior students. Not only that, but they seem to have stopped coming....

I'm willing to pay $30, but I live in asia. I guess the shipping is more expensive..

Size 36 is not the correct size for nito.

Size 36 is for midget nito.

My mistake then. I thought while it was normally a 37 you could also use a 36 (http://www.kendoaustralia.asn.au/content/?page_id=89). I would not have thought one size down would qualify it as midget nito. But if he's only practicing three months, it's long enough off to not be worth waiting.

My mistake, seems 36 would work. Might be too light though. For me personally the grip would definitely be way too small.
At any rate, I wouldn't worry about nito.

Hi Fast Kendo,
Yeah, shipping it internationally will probably be more expensive. I am not sure by how much, but if you could help a little with the shipping expensive I could do it. I sent you a PM.
So for Nito you use a size 37 Shinai? I always thought it would be more like a size 38 or maybe 39? Is there any particular reason as to why you use such a shorter Shinai? Is it due to the weight and rules? These Size 36 Shinai are pretty light that's for sure. Nothing like a size 39. I know someone in Covina Dojo practices Nito....

I don't really know but my suspicion is that it is to make it more fair and balanced when fighting itto; because some people will try it without the strength to use proper tenouchi and will therefore be cranking people on the head (like folks without sufficient strength and ability who do jodan) and they want to keep the weight lower; and perhaps for historical reasons I wouldn't even speculate about that have to do with nitoryu tradition.
If you know a guy who practices it, ask him. Let us know what he says.

You might want to ask your Sensei if he/she would like to have them for beginners. I know of one sensei that prefers for adult beginners to use the size 36 for the first few weeks. When ready, move to the appropriate adult size.

For Nito the reason they usually use the 37" shinai is that it is lighter and easier to control one handed. Besides they usually hold the shinai at the end of the tsuka which if I remember right can give the person a little longer reach than a person using a 39" shinai with two hands.

So then you can use a size 39 Shinai for Nito? This includes legally so in tournaments? I always thought that the hand which holds the longer Shinai changes its grip positioning depending on the situation. Such as holding it near the end when you are at a distance and near the hand guard when up close. I totally agree about the longer reach.
size 36 and 39

So both arms outstretched with hands at about the same level and you should get the same results. Extra reach is extra reach. Though there was a clear difference in weight, and that was a size 36 to 39.
I doubt my sensei will have beginners use these size 36. All the new people that have started were told to buy a size 39. Though for females it was size 38 female Shinai. Maybe if they were 37....
All of this reminds me a little about Henry smalls. I am not sure what Shinai size he uses for his fighting style, but he switches his grip extensively in combat.

Wonder what sound his fumikomi makes.

No. Check out the regulations I linked to in my prior post.
I think the maximum length for the daito is 114cm (and apparently usually it's a 36 or a 37).
Respectfully, I think you may be confusing itto with nito. Normally adult men use 39s. I think, but I don't know, that many adult women use 38s but some also use 39s. Normally I've only seen beginners start with those same sizes; the smaller sizes are for younger kenshi (or nito).

Hi JJ,
So 36 or 37 huh. Does this apply to all kendo federations and not just Australia? I think if I were to practice for Nito I'd pick a 37 over a 36, but that is just me. Thanks for the input it was really helpful :). I am hoping to learn Nito and Jodan at some point later on.

No special rules for sufferers of dwarfism, afaik.

The webpage says it took the regulations from the FIK. So yes, at least all federations under the FIK/ZNKR, and that means the AUSKF, which means you. :)
Maybe try to sell your shinai in person - I've done that a couple times - it is easier than shipping them.

Gonna be hard to find a buyer unless you have kids in the dojo, pretty much anyone high school or up is going to use a 38 or 39.

Too bad my kids aren't older, but I think a 36 is still too big for a six-year old. Speaking of which, anyone have a good size chart for sizes under 36? The ones I've seen are pretty vague.

really height dependent for kids, and the way they grow its hard to associate to age best guide i have seen is measure from the floor to their armpit and use that as a size. I'm sure there are other theories/guides out there as well.

Gonna be hard to find a buyer unless you have kids in the dojo, pretty much anyone high school or up is going to use a 38 or 39.39 is illegal for high school, 38 is illegal for kids 15 and under. However, I usually will put the kid with the size I feel is right for them regardless of age. 36 works pretty well for most kids 8-12, I will sometimes give a 37 to the bigger/stronger kids. jjcruiser, a 34 should be fine for a 6 year old.

39 is illegal for high school,
If they are in a specific youth division, but in the general shodan/nidan division they use 39 same as the rest of everyone else. And likely thats what they practice with too.

My 8 and 10 yr olds use size 34. My 8 yr old was using a 32 but the shinai can break easier as the shinai is thinner and for some reason could not handle travel between my home and the dojo. My 4 yr old has a 28 that she uses at home when I allow her. My 11yr old uses a 36 and my 13 yr old uses a 38. I have 37 available but I bought a Shoto some time ago so that I can occasion when allowed to do some Nito. My sensei has gone to some of the Nito seminars. I would not like to hold anything larger than a 37 over my head for some time one handed. I figure I can mess around with Nito at times but I know I have a long ways to go with one sword in Chudan before I truly begin to worry about Jodan or Nito. I would have been interested in the shinais but a few weeks ago I was given some shinais that ranged in sizes of 34, 36 and 38. I believe that my kids are set for a little bit.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I placed an auction on Ebay to see if I can find anyone else who would be interested. I threw in some carrying sleeves and Suburiko to see if that helped.

You have 4, 8, 10, 11, and 13 year old kids? Wow. I can barely handle my 3 and 6 year old boys.
Thanks for the thoughts, btw.
