I was watching jigeiko the other day and noticed one of the senior student's chuudan no kamae was angled, with the kisaki pointing upwards towards the opponent's face (or node-dare). Having never seen this (or maybe just never noticed) before I was wondering if this is like seigan for naginata. Anybody know?

Some of the time I use a modified kamae to entice a specific attack from the opponent. I get in trouble for this usually.

Probably you want to be careful doing anything which is not orthodox until you know why you are doing it and the purpose behind it. Otherwise you are just learning instinctive techniques and those will get torn apart by someone that can see the flaw in your technique.

If you know what you are doing slight modifications in kamae will likely change your seme and good seme is pretty damn handy I've been told, one day I will buy a jar of quality seme and then everybody better watch out hehehe

Thanks for the reply...
I wasn't planning on taking up this kamae, because like you said someone usually sensei busts your chops if your kamae is off. But this didn't seem like bad form.
I could see the advantage of this modified kamae by shorterning the distance between you and your opponent, and also your kote is nicely covered. I also see alot of people choke up on their naginata to get closer.
Personally I like a nice solid chuudan with a side of debana-waza.
