i just chipped my sword yesterday accidently hitting the glass covering on the light bulb on my ceiling(smashed everywhere), it chipped about 1.5cm from the kissaki. Does this mean the blade isnt tempered properly or just that it hit the wrong way? Also, i might be a pragmatist, but would this effect the function of a blade being chipped in the area that its in?

What kind of sword are we talking about?

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Without knowing any details, I'd chalk this one up to an improper cut. Cuts are made with the Monouchi.

By the same token, I would not expect to chip the Kissaki on a shallow cut either.

Maybe the answer will be clearer when we know the details.

Its a steel iaito batto blade from swordstore.com. The actual kissaki isnt chipped. Its chipped on the edge of the blade 1.5 cm from the kissaki(between yokote and kissaki). The chip itself is about a millimeter or less. Is it normal to chip that easily?

If all you hit was glass, I would be surprised by the chipping; however, if you caught some metal part in the light fixture, I would not.

Yes, it is very easy to chip a edge of the blade. I have seen the edge of blades chip cutting through bamboo. The hardness of glass will test the edge to its limit, as your mishap has shown.
