hi everybody,
virtually since the first kendo-lesson my right shoulder hurts. i've already been to a doctor and a slight bursa inflammation was diagnosed. i've started a physical therapy a week ago.
did anyone of you have had such a bursa inflammation? and how did you get rid of it? did you keep on practising kendo while your bursa was inflamed?
i would appreciate any replies :). thanks in advance!
Hi,
could you please give us some more information?
How old are you?
Have you done any other sports before?
Is the inflamation possibly a result of a former injury / Did you damage your shoulder before you picked up kendo?
Itīs good, you already consulted a doctor.
I would not continue kendo practice, until your shoulder has healed completely. Maybe you can ask your sensei about this. He might have experienced injuries like this also and might give you valueable advice for your practice.
Do you overdo suburi at home maybe? With a too heavy bokken?
Kind regards from Frankfurt, Germany ;-)

well i'm 20 and did western fencing + taekwondo before and those sports did no harm. the inflammation definitely results from kendo - too high demand for my shoulder (mainly because of suburi i guess)
Do you overdo suburi at home maybe? With a too heavy bokken? *sigh* no i don't do suburi at home... standard suburi during kendo practise (twice a week) is already too much for my shoulder ;_;
we are only a very small group (about 5-7 ppl) and such an injury has not occurred before - so my sensei can't help me.
Kind regards from Frankfurt, Germany ;-)
greetings from woerthersee/carinthia :D
ps: i would welcome any "tale of woe" concerning bursa inflammation of the shoulder.

A bursa is a small serous sac between a tendon and a bone. It keeps the joint moving properly and when it get inflammed, causes very serious pain. I once was unable to lift a cup because the "bursitis" in one shoulder was so bad. And, it often takes weeks to heal and can require cortisone injections to improve.

was your bursa inflammation caused by sport? if so, would you mind to tell me what you did? :)
allthough my bursa (LOL) isn't inflamed that bad it is still a serious problem for me.

For 15+ years I took epee lessons twice a week and fenced bouts for a few hours on Saturdays.

A tale of woe? Heres one.
I was practacing with my bud, and he accidently pushed me, I fell on my tailbone and cracked it. I had to sit on a donut for the longest time :emb:

I have bursitis from tennis. I couldn't do any overhand returns or serves. It gets inflammed every once in awhile.
To let the inflammation go down, you need to rest your shoulder. Continued activity (kendo or anything else that works the shoulder hard) will prevent the inflammation from going down.
