So i recently bought a Carbonic bamboo shinai. Not carbon but fumigated bamboo one. I was wondering, that is I guess that maintenance for this kind of shinai is the same as for ordinary bamboo one - sanding the slats and oiling them before use? Anyone has any experience with it?

Could you provide link to or pictures of said shinai? I'm curious.

Perhaps me means a smoked or bio treated shinai similar to these?

ok yeah... that appears to be what David is saying... some kind of 'smoked' shinai or 'BIO' -treated shinai...

sorry, I have never used one, so I don't really know about maintenance....

Does it smell funny? One of the guys bough one and it smelled like ham...:D it was awful in tai-a-tari :gasmask:
From what I know it doesn’t require anything special except the usual new shinai treatment

I was referring to "smoked" shinai not to a shinai from that particular supplier :D

time limit :D

The floor of my house is covered in carbonised bamboo. I was told the process merely turns it into a slightly darker brown colour, nothing more. It only requires cleaning with water and a microfibre cloth and when slightly dampened it releases the lovely smell of caramel which makes me crave chocolate! I've put on 25lbs since having it installed....

I used to have a mino smoked shinai from E-bogu and it was much more durable compared to my other shinai. That being said however, when one of the staves cracked, it split right down the middle. The interior of the slat was absolutely bone dry which made me wonder how it was able to remain much more durable up to that point. That being said, I did very little maintenance with it other than rounding the edges simply because it didn't need any. No oil was ever applied to it on my part and no splinters shaved off. My limited opinion is that with these types of shinai try to do the same usual maintenance with it and keep an eye on the slats.

And to the OP, yes, chances are it's going to smell like bacon when you unwrap it.
