Do buttons

I recently got a set of bogu.

There was these buttons that you use for the top pair of him that come around the front.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about and knows how to fit them could you please tell me?

They are mainly used by children for the top loops of the do. If you know how to tie your shoelaces, you shouldnt use them :)

The button should have two slots. Thread the do string from the back through one slot to the front, then back through the second slot. The button is now hanging on the doh string. Now you just button your doh on like you'd use any other button (slip the button through the loop on the doh from the back). Slide the button up and down on the string to adjust the height.

If you're a teenager or adult, tie your doh in the normal way, don't use the buttons.

Even if you are a child, you should learn to tie them the correct way. If you can tie your men, then you certainly can tie your doh himo. Have someone teach you a good way to tie the doh himo, and then practice it for homework a billion times. After doing it like 20 times in a row then there won't be a need for the doh buttons.

Practicing putting on your bogu properly is just as important as practicing suburi and all that other stuff too.

:wink: It was so funny. I was at the Salinas Taikai this past weekend and I saw some middle aged man with do buttons(lol)...they were quite reminiscent(spelling) of those little balls that kids wear on their shoelaces to keep them tied. Definitely learn how to tei the do himo. :wink:

my instructor wears do buttons. i dont think it is because he doesnt know how to tie his do himo! or that he is being lazy, it is just that it is more convenient, when the himo become worn and slip when they are tied, it is not an issue with do buttons, and it means that the do is always at the right level. it is like saying that people should not wear clothes with zips, because that would show that they cant use buttons. if it is acceptable for some people (children) to wear do buttons, why not anyone? (i dont use them myself, despite having a set, because for me, it comes down to personal preference that i think it looks better with knots, however i dont oppose anyone else using them)
for soapdish, if you have trouble putting your do buttons on to the himo, try wetting the ends first, or untying the knots and pulling the threads in the knots back, pull it through, then retie them. also, if you find they slip down while you are wearing them, tie a knot just under it at the right level.

just wondering, why do people not think do buttons should be used by adults? is it the 'laziness' thing, just the look is not right, or that it is not 'traditional'?

One of my intstructors (now deceased), used himo buttons. He was Japanese, hachi-dan hanshi, and could beat the tar out of all of us.

Good to know. From now on, i'm using himo buttons.

All of the above, plus the fact that you should be able to wear your equipment properly, it's part of kendo. I'm sure there are several examples of sensei who don't mind or whatever, but I'm telling you that the majority of them do mind - even if they don't say anything to you directly.

I've always just shown my students how to tie the Do from the first time they've worn it and never had any issues. But I agree with Neil, the sensei would most likely look at you and wonder why you were still using them when your older.

My sensei never told me of do buttons and ive only seen one 3rd kyu with them, so in our dojo its tie your do right from the start as well, or go home with broken ribs.
