I note that '13 Assassins' is available for pre-order from Amazon.com and isn't even listed on the UK site. So buy the US Blu-Ray, will it play on my European player or are Blu-Ray discs region coded like DVDs?

There are regions.

Damn those anti-free trade nations! I wonder if Blu-Ray players can be 'chipped' to play all regions, like DVD players?

For anyone that hasn't seen this film already, I'll just say this: you'll get a kick out of some of the terrible instances of poorly-executed MJER kaewaza (Yaegaki for example). ;)

Well.... they're actors, not Iaidoka! Its still a great film.

I listened to a webcast the other day where Miike said that it is especially difficult making period movies these days. According to him, there used to be a pool of actors who were specifically trained for swordplay in movies, but that these days they are harder to find. Don't know how true that is, but that was his take on it..

In a to-ken shop here in Tokyo I saw an advert for swordplay acting classes. I didn't check it out since that's not my cup of tea but I venture to guess it's for people who want to learn to look cool with a katana rather than practice swordsmanship as budo.

It also doesn't help that the cinema market (Japanese and otherwise) demands casting idols for their looks/popularity rather than necessarily for their acting skills.
