I want to start this thread to see what kendo vids people are watching and which ones they think are golden. Are there any that you recommend as a must have. hopefully this thread will highlight vids that I have missed or other people here have, and give us a chnce to talk about the good/ bad points. Perhaps inspiring the KW team to increase there work load and produce the best series of english language DVD`s on kendo (ha ha kidding) wouldnt that be great. They could vids you have taken yourself of some special training etc or something commercial.

To kick things of. I have a few oldies that I watch over and over, not sure if they are still available to buy...... but if you get your hands on them treasure them.

真剣道 (real kendo) must be 15-20 years old only on VHS as far as I know. I copied them from the library at IBU. It has lots of high level sensei demonstrating drills and keiko. At the end of the matches there are replays from different anglles and above. then they have hints (in written in japanese) about how each particular point was scored
most of the people in these tapes are now 8th dans.

100 kote points, 100 do points, 100 men points.
each tape has 100 ippons take from various shiai, Tozai, all japans, 7 dan shiai etc.
just a collection of great ippons. each coming with aslow replay.
I believe in image training, and only try to watch remember good points. I believe watching vids, of your mistakes leaves that image in your mind and makes it harder to fix. That why I like these, just great stuff. And I reckon nearly every on this forum must have a sensei in there somewhere.

I have the hidekatsu dvd`s too and think they are great. I also watch them many over and over. but they seem to put me to sleep, where as the above I kind of get an adrenalin kick. kendo lullaby?

Tenran jiai. Old kendo performed infront of the emperor. great historical dvd a bit expensive though.

I also have various all japan champs, but I guess we all do. One of my favourites was from more than 10 years ago with big Eiga. Its back home so cant really remember who won, but his kendo was shit hot loved it.

As I have the hidekatsu DVD`s I`ve kept away from other training dvd`s like the chiba sensei dvd`s $$$$expensive or the kendo principle dvd`s (heard mixed things) and I am very happy with the hidekatsu ones.

What have you got?

Thanks for t he link I watched it last night, bloody great. My japanese is ok but I wish I could understand
just a little more of what he was saying. I`ve had keiko like the last 7dan sensei, but that was only 1 sensei and I was stuffed.
he did it at the end of 3hours. remarkable.

When I started Kendo, Youtube wasn't so popular, and living in the UK it was hard to lay your hands on decent videos.

However, I had 2 VHS tapes which I watched till they wore out - I think I watched them alternatively every day of the week! They were the Nat Geo Documentary 'Kendo's Gruelling Challenge' and the ZNKR instructional Kendo videos... That was it...

When I got more connected to people in Japan, my DVD collection grew massively in size! mainly All Japans, Gyokuryuki Taikai and the like, and a few instructional videos too...

Then in May this year, I finally got my hands on the original Japanese Language DVD og ただ一撃にかける - i.e. the NHK Documentary on Eiga Naoki.

Since buying it, I have watched it EVERY week at least once... There are personal reasons why it is special to me, but yeah, it is definately a 'must have'...

I've got the aforementioned 100 kote and men, no do though. i would be very interested in learning how to get hold of that, and a tsuki one if it exists.

Also got plenty of DVD's from the front of kendo mags, usually All Japans, Hachidan Taikai or Gyoku Ryuki.

Haven't got the Eiga documentary, but have a flaky copy of the Nat Geo one, though I havent watched it in a while.

Also got a few "official" Zen Nihon Senshuken and Nanadan Taikai DVD's as well. One of the nanadan ones gets a relatively decent amount of air time in Castle gureesukaru because I find a lot of the points in it appealing from a sense of where I want my kendo to go.

I`ll have to look it up/ buy it. From your post does that mean there is an English language ver?

there is also a nito, and counter attact one available. not sure if there is a tsuki one available but I`d buy it in a jiffy if I found it.
As for where to get the 100 do dvd this is where I got them. I didnt pay the $20 each he gave me a deal and I got all the waza dvd`s plus shipping for around $50 I think. But bewarned they are not originals but good quality copies. Not sure if officially they are still for sale anywhere. But even copies, a must have. I thought it a great deal. ( I didnt know they were copies at the time)

Yes, but I have only seen it on Youtube... It think it is called 'A Single Blow'...

I think it might have been taken off Youtube now though... at least it seems part one has...

I bought the DVD at the Kyoto Taikai from the ZNKR stand... but it was like 3500 Yen... and its only a 40 min programme... but like I said, I watch it every week, so I got my money's worth!
