Hello. I was wondering if anyone could tell me just what is going on in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZdqOK_DzUI&feature=feedf). The venue seems quite legitimate, but I'm not familiar with the kamae the fellow on the left is using.

Neat find. Never seen it before. Awaiting an answer to your question....

If you were to attach a name to it I guess it would be something like 片手逆上段 (Katate Gyaku Jodan) or some people might refer to it as 片手右上段 (Katate Migi Jodan), depends on the speaker I think...

Interesting choice of things to do when you are faced with Chiba Sensei... infront of loads of people...

Looks like nito without the shoto.

:D

The little flair at 0:24ish seems unique.

All the putting the tip on the floor is a little distracting....

Also, almost look like saber fencing.

It looks like guntou-jutsu (as described from the 1894' Edition of the Kenjutsu Kyouhan), basically a katate kendo with the left hand resting on the left side; Although in guntou-jutsu, when assuming this kamae, the tip of the shinai should stay towards the opponent's nodo...

+1 for katate gyaku-jodan. I believe he's doing that to eliminate his left kote as a target because that tends to be a litter easier to hit from regular hidari jodan.

Seems pretty defensive to me - he's got his men covered up, his left kote is unavailable, his right requires a tough angle to see and both doh are covered. Meanwhile he is not attacking very effectively. Don't like.

Appears to me he might have some physical difficulty with his arm. I did this with my left arm for a few weeks while my carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand was healing a few years ago.

To me it looked like a demonstration of the two kamae, rather than anything competitive.

I get the feeling this kamae was specifically chosen because it is so defensive. Like hikiwake might have been the goal all along.
It definitely has that saber fencing feel, and is interesting to watch.

The answer is probably on the vertical banner in the video. Too blurry to read.

I saw a katate kamae similar to this, I think against a jodan player. It was when I just started, so I couldn't comprehend it at all.

But I did pick up quickly he was being anything BUT defensive.
