Hey moooooocow.. I don't think they have officially announced anything yet. I have heard rumors of Chicago though.

According to our US newsletter it's scheduled to be held July 2nd and 3rd with the test on July 4th. Locations proposed are Washington D.C., Denver, Las Vegas and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Can you imagine having it in DC on July 4th weekend? It'll be hot, crowded, and you'll be lucky to get a room for under $200. Who came up with that bright idea? Ann Arbor? I suppose we'll have to fly to Detroit and then drive there. Can you say cheap airfare? Not!!!
Somebody tell our US leaders to think of the members for a change.

It was pretty damn hot last US champs.. However, we had USC's nice A/C gym to play in. Plus, the east coasters have had to pay the airfare to fly to the west coast for the last 2 US championships. I'd like it to be in Chicago. It'll be hot and humid, but I'll get to see my relatives.

Going to the East coast or Midwest is fine, going during the 4th of July holiday is not. Especially to DC. The tournament will likely be outside of DC anyway. I think I heard Maryland.
I think this is not well thought out. There hasn't been a final decision as far as I have heard. Seattle would be nice, but would they do it? Airfare from the west coast would be cheap, but probably not so cheap for the East coast.

Cool, thanks Inouye. I propose we have the tournament in Seattle. If we have it in Seattle, we can drive over to Vancouver and hang out there until the day of the tournament, and it's relatively close to me. Hahaha, I'm still not sure whether to try out for the Men's Team or the awesome Goodwill Team. Goodwill sure sounds like a lot of fun. It's not necessarily serious, but you never know who might compete. An All Japan kenshi might enter in the goodwill tournament. Who knows?

Moocow, would you like to elaborate a bit? What's goodwill tournament?
Can't you enter both? Can anyone be a part of goodwill team?
Center
The Men's division has two divisions, team and individuals competition. It's exclusively for men over 16.
The Goodwill division is individual only, anyone (male/female) over 16 can compete. I'm not sure, but I think in the men's division you have to be a resident of the US to compete in it, while in goodwill you can be anyone (of any country, etc, as long as a federation puts you on the team). So in goodwill, you might end up playing a Japanese import that was visiting a federation for a while or some newb that just got placed on the team for fun. It's a hodgepodge(sp?) of kendoka skill level.

Not quite accurate, you must be at least ikkyu for the goodwill. At Las Vegas 99 we had the most non-AUSKF entrants with individuals from Mexico, Hawaii and Canada. I believe 2nd place was a 5 Dan woman from Japan. Also the Men's Division is 16 and up but there is also Senior Youth which is 16-18. Team is 16 years and older either the Mens or Womens. And again there is Senior Youth Team. So someone 16-18 can compete in either division but not in both. However you could compete in 16-18 individuals and in Men's or Women's team. This has been done. If my memory is correct Danny Yang did just that in 99.
I doubt Seattle would be the host since it is way late in the process to become involved. Denver would be a good place and I think they have done some research on hosting. Unless AUSKF is willing to put up the money for a bigger venue we (PNKF) could not find a place so far to host with 5-6 courts and audience. The only other solution is a smaller venue with the tournament over 3 days which makes more sense. The last two (99 & 02) the shimpan where at the breaking point they had so much time on the court.

the 5 dan women senshu from Japan won 2nd? I was there at the tournament but I beleive she fought Ching from NCKF and she won 1st. Or am I wrong? Anyway, I heard a rumor that it was going to be somewere in the north of California(Washington area). I was kinda looking forward to Seatle too.

San Dan is the minimum rank for seniors. According to the results the Japanese women was first and Ching was second. As I said, I wasn't positive, the point was who participates in the goodwill.

us championships huh, I'm goin for the big win in the mens division. if I win 1st place, I don't have to go though that awful elimination for the worlds try outs. If I even win 2nd when the 1st place winner is not american I still could go to worlds so I have the greatest chance. And besides, If I win the mens, I could proove that I'm the stongest Jyo-dan in the US. One of my goals in kendo. I heard that moocow is going for goodwill group but.. I hope he knows that the plane ticket to where ever we're going, it's not free for the good will division. Only for Jr., Sr.,Womens, and Mens. Good will has to pay.

Itazura, how did you know that they have decided for it to be in Ann Arbor, if it is true, it's awesome. I live just 30 mins from ann arbor. Btw, from detroit airport to ann arbor, it will only take 30 mins drive (or less). And pretty much, they have lots of shuttle rides from detroit metro to ann arbor, because of the UofM campus. ;)

West coast. I checked LA to Detroit and off peak is around $200 up to $300. For summer it'll likely be $300 plus. Besides the taikai what is there to do in Ann Arbor? I'm sure not too interested in Detroit. Touring a car factory might be interesting, like I'll have time for that.

What's there in Ann Arbor? Let's see.. there's the U of M campus.. very nice one, you can visit the Law Quad, and U of M central campus is just right next to the Downtown, lots of restaurants and cafes (don't think you will spend more than one week over here) Besides, I'd think you'll come mainly for the tournament rite.. For nights, i know some clubs ard here... depends if you want to go to gay/lesbian or straight clubs, I know both places. Basically it's a campus town, so there are definitely quite a lot of things to do.
And of course, if you are interested, there's always Detroit Zoo.

Perhaps he's going as a spectator. Besides for a few it's a foregone conclusion they'll make the team. Or maybe do the goodwill division.
For some of the US federation teams you can name the first 3 or 4 that'll make the team before they ever have tryouts.

haha! I was in goodwill. I should've stayed in adult team! One match and you're done? If I am going to lose, then I'm gonna at least play 2 or 3 matches before I walk. At least I have time to collect my thoughts after the first loss.
As for the US federations yes, even for the US team for the last couple. Either one or more of Minami-sensei, Matsuda-sensei, or Onitsuka-sensei for the US team. But some of those constants might be out this coming year NOrcal and Socal alike.

I sure hope they get a good turnout for this taikai. Kato sensei is trying to get more going on the national level for men just as the PNKF taikai is for women. Kato sensei and myself don't see why if Europe can have a tournament every year that the US can't have one in the off year. Winning or placing in one of these is a good kickoff for the US team tryouts and next years nationals. The PNKF women's team tournament had really stiff competition last time with most of the Hawaiin Women's team and most of the Canadian Womens team at it. Of course PNKF and NCKF both had their best entered. The championship came down to a 1 point playoff between Nishimoto and Barr. It was a nail biter all the way.

Yo, I'll see you guys there. My dojo's in the Detroit-Ann Arbor area, too. If you want to know what to do, ask me and Wolverinekenshi. Detroit isn't very touristy but there's lots to do. Ann Arbor is a cool campus town, lots of shops and bars. Detroit has a nationally-renowned art museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, you could do the motown tour, see where the Funk Brothers recorded and all that. Greenfield Village and Henry Ford historical museum, Detroit historical museum, Rouge factory tour - if you're really up for it, I'll take you on an extended tour of abandoned buildings and factories and crack houses. Heh heh.
But seriously, Ann Arbor's a cool little town. We could all go to Dominic's and drink sangria til we puke, that'd be fun. Chicago's about 5 hours away.

If I actually go and have some time to go around, I'm gonna look for car museums. They don't call it the Motor City for nothin.
As long as school is going on, I'll probably stay on the West Coast for Taikais (though it does sound interesting). The North/South was a drain mentally as it was..

Right next door to Ann Arbor is a little automotive town called Ypsilanti (where I live). There are three car museums, and in summer every Thursday night they close off a block of the historic district and park classic cars up and down the block while packing the bars' sidewalk tables and blasting classic rock.
The three car museums in Ypsi are a Hudson museum, a Royal Motors museum and a firetruck museum. I don't know of any good ones in Detroit, although you can tour the old Rouge Plant and the Henry Ford museum is a museum of industrialization in general. Henry Ford and Greenfield Village are attached - the Village has 19th-century rural stuff (including a house where Edgar Alan Poe lived!).

What are the qualification for AUS Kendo Championships (US National)?
-individual (including youth/women/senior)
-team
-goodwill
we have some exchange students, and wondering if they are eligible for Ann Arbor taikai.
jmarsten
22-07-2004, 07:54 AM
Currently the qualifications are: member of
AUSKF (as in member of SWUSKIF) Womens=16 and older, mens=16 & older but either men or women 16-18 can be in the senior youth division. Goodwill must be at least ikkyu and member and at least 16. Seniors 50 years and over must be at least 3 Dan
An individual could compete in the senior youth and then on men's team same with women's team. BTW must have been on the AUSKF roles for one year prior to the tournament.
All of this subject to change at the next AUSKF meeting in November. The one thing some folks were trying to change was the citizenship requirement to compete in the individual championship. However that could cause a lot of argument because there is no special guest membership and then you are excluding some of your members. Actually people aren't members of AUSKF on regional federations are, but it would exclude individuals who have paid the fees in good faith. In other US championships all kinds of non-citizens compete and have won.

Yes as long as they are entered on the regional teams roster. What you cannot do is be on two teams as in Senior youth and Men's or Women's. So a girl could be in the senior youth individual and the women's team but not the senior youth team too.

remember what I said about November, that is when the rules committee will present the rules for the 2005 taikai. There has been almost no changes to the rules since the first one. Basically a couple of loop holes were closed. The one rule change that really surprised me was the special shinai designation for the youth division in the 2000 tournament. They deviated from the IKF rules and had shorter shinai.
