Hi, I am an Japanese English teacher and also a kendo coach at a high school in Japan.
I have a question. Have you ever played kendo in Japan? How often?
We have many foreign teachers who do. I would like to take a short poll.
Thank you.

I studied as a researcher at Osaka University for a year and a half. Played kendo while I was there. I suspect that a number of the JET type folks pick up kendo while in Japan.

I'm just starting my second year here (and about to kick it off in a dramatic way with 3 days of kendo hell -- would be 6 if i had more vacation days). Other than not really understanding most of what the sensei say, I love training in Japan, and I highly recommend coming here if you get the chance!

I'm a JET, but I started kendo before coming to Japan (kendo is probably the biggest reason I became interested in Japan and applied to the JET Program). I do know one other JET though who has "picked it up" since coming (2 years ago), and he just got his shodan last month...

Hey Kendo Chick, how'd you manage to find work in Japan? Did you go through a Canadian agency, or did you find something on your own?

I was lucky enough to practice in Nagoya a few months back, what an incredible experience it was!! I hope to return to Japan next year.

I have practiced in Kagoshima while on vacation there. Unfortunatley it's only for two weeks at a time. My wife grew up playing Kendo there. We will be having a baby boy soon and hopefully he will be interested and I can take him there to learn.
