Generally, women and high ranking, older sensei wear white bogu. I've never seen black bogu before. You must mean the dark blue variety, right? Remember, there is no visible sign of rank among kendoka.

i have seen black bogu. It is generally just a cheaper alternative to blue bogu since it costs less to dye it black than indigo.
