depends on age weight size...
so if you're 80 years old, but 190cm and 110 kg... ud get a BIG shinai...

Usually, most people use 38's or 39's....for shinai size, those are the classical sizings. I dont know for age though....or size for that matter.

Shinai are measured in Japanese units of sun, a sun is about 3 cm. So a 39 is 39 sun long. You can get them in sizes 30, 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 39. 39 is for adult male, 38 for adult female or senior high school age, 37 junior high school, 36 middle school, 34 elementary school, 30 and 32 for little kids. Of course you have to adjust to accomodate for different sizes and strengths, your sensei should be able to recommend the right size for you.

i have a question that has bothered me quite a while. the conclusion i draw from your post is that the shinai size depends on the height of a person. are women allowed to use a size 39 shinai at a shiai if they are tall enough, or do they must use size 38?
well, i am aware that women's shinais may be (must be?) lighter than men's at a shiai.

thank you

The restrictions are minimum weight and maximum length. The length restriction for men and women is the same, 120 cm. The weight restriction for women is lower, 440 g vs 510 for men. So women could play with a full-size 39, or use a lighter one if they like. Similarily men can use a 38 so long as it's a heavy one. The age stuff I posted above is not official, that's more guidelines for what size is right for about what age group.

Depends on the tournament. They weigh and measure at the Canadian national championships.
