As a samurai, I suggest you watch "The Last Samurai" at least 3 times. Then, and only then, you might get a clue.

Nearly everything has been said, only:
If a samurai has done somehting wrong he could do seppuku do clean his familly's name.....so most of them liked it more to die than to life in shame!

As a samurai, I suggest you watch "The Last Samurai" at least 3 times. Then, and only then, you might get a clue.I've seen Last samurai two times and every time I cry ed as a baby. :cry: :cry: It's very hard for us non-japanese people to understand seppuku and the japanese tradition. :confused: In my opinoin it's a shame (don't get me wrong:nervous: ) for every single person who get killed in a such way.:cry: But that's only an opinion of a non-japanese girl, who is trying to understand the bushido and japanese philosophy. :sleeping:

I will tell you one thing: Last Samurai ist one of the reasons why I have started training kendo. :rolleyes: I think the move is great, worth of watching it.:wink:

there is a good book by Inazo Nitobe called "Bushido: The Soul of Japan" which was written around a 100 years ago. in this book he explains all the moral concepts that were important to the samurai such as loyalty, honour and also seppuku. it's a very interesting book and goes some way to explaining not just the samurai's ethics but also those of the japanese people to a degree.

It's a combination drama/action movie. There's another thread in the Media area of this forum that talks about it. The drama is pretty intense and it's very action packed with all the fighting scenes.

Its kind of a hollywood homage of Kurosawa smashed in with Mel GIbson's Braveheart, with an actor more suited to gunplay, and a story that is slightly less then realistic, yet still rather entertaining.

The Last Samurai is Dances with Wolves with people poking eachother with pointy objects. It's obviously unrealistic, but also does a good job of using japanese cinema style.
