Does anyone know the registration deadline for this tourny? Although it falls on the Obon holiday season, I still don't know if I can take off from work. However I would love to come in for the tourny and seminar if possible. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The USNF annual Board of Directors' and General Membership Meetings took place over the weekend. As Admin. Sec. of the [US] East Coast Naginata Federation, I am waiting for a full report from our representatives to the USNF Board as this particular item was on the meeting agenda.

I will let you know as soon as I get that information.

In the past, the registration deadline has been one month prior to the event.

Thank you.
I realise now that I should have just asked you directly, since you are the only other American naginata person on this forum. Whoops.

Brian,

Please do not bother Tanaka-s.; I know she is quite busy.

There are other officers in USNF who are responsible for getting this information out to the rest of us; let's let them do their jobs so that we can get a complete (or as complete as possible) package of information out to the forumites.

Thank you.

Well, since I have a class with her on Tuesday I figured I'd ask her. But I'll refrain and wait for the official announcement.

Leiv,

I am going to see Malyne Hazard (USNF Exec. Sec.) this weekend at a regional Naginata event in Jersey City, NJ. I should have a number of the particulars for the USNF annual seminar and biennial championship next week. Sit tight.

We had a good time this weekend. I got up with a few aching and stiff body parts - must have been the 4-hour return drive. :D

Latest info on Bryn Mawr ---

Deadline for the US Championship is ***1 July***. Forms are expected to be up on the USNF website soon.

The tentative schedule is:
seminar: 11-13 August
Championship: 14 August
Shinsa: 15 August

Fees are still TBD as the USNF is in final negotiations with BMC. More definitive info is expected in a week or so.

BTW, this is the 30 anniversary of USNF, so there is a commitee figuring parites and momentos and other special events/activities.

More as I get it,

The championships have been open to the public in the past; I do not think that that will change this year. It if does, I will make a note of it when the official info finally arrives.

I'd bet large amounts of money it's open to the public. You might even be able to jump in on a introductory lesson if you ask real nice. :)

The BMC contract for facilities, room and board was sent to the USNF Board of Directors at the beginning of this week. When that contract is blessed by the Board, they will be able to issue a complete list of costs.

If there is no objection to items in that current contact, then I expect that the USNF will publically announce those costs in the very near future.

Raymond,

Thanks again for the information. My wife wasn't kidding when she said airfare during Obon is expensive. I might have to see what BMC thinks about people sleeping in tents on campus grounds. :D
I must get back to the dojo and start training otherwise this will be a waisted trip.

Once again... Thank you!!! m(__)m

This is kind of an off topic question but do you know why both shikake-oji #1 and #2 are being used for the dangai engi comp? #1 and #2 are so similar that I figured (at least in my head this makes sense) they would throw #3 or #5 in there to mix things up.
Actually #3 is the hardest for me, so there are no complaints here; I am just wondering.

My feeling is that this opens up the Dangai Engi to more people. S.O. #1,2,4 are 3-Kyu test requirements, so they would be practiced by 4-Kyu students and up. S.O #1-5 are 2-Kyu test requirements and would be practiced by 3-Kyu's and up.

Given the difficulties of S.O #3 & #5, it makes sense to skip them; they can always appear in the Yudansha Engi anyway (as #3 does for this Shiai).

I see, that makes sense to me. I am really looking forward to this, it should be great fun. It would be nice if the Canadians could make it as well. Thanks again.

BTW; I saw Fran Vail, Kurt Schmucker, and Lowe sensei last Thursday at the Shubukan. I was just on my way to practice, I had no idea anyone was coming in, so I was quite surprised to say the least. I hope testing went well for all of those who justed tested.

My understanding is that the CNF has been informed and that some members will be there. Although they cannot participate in the USNF Championships, there will most likely be associated Friendship/Goodwill events open to all. Those will depend on who signs up to attend the events.

USNF had three Shogo candidates: Schmucker & Lowe for Renshi and Nakano-s. for Kyoshi. Vall was challenging Godan. I have not received any word back on results though, but I do expect to hear soon.

I also believe that Tanaka-s. was there; I know Yamauchi-s. was there.

Oh I didn't see Tanaka or Yamauchi sensei. It would have been nice to get some keiko in with everyone, but I am sure I will get my fair share in this August. :D
Oh yeah, also Nakano sensei mentioned that Alex Bennett also tested for godan last Sunday. Best of luck to the Dr.

Although not on the schedule, my reading of the contract synopsis with Bryn Mawr College is that we will have one or more facilities available for open practice. We had open practices at BMC when we were there two years ago.

As usual, times and places will be announced during our stay at BMC, most likely on a daily basis.

 Can't go
Why, oh why did it have to fall on the Obon holiday?!

The reason for having the events in August was to be close to the re-opening of school at BMC so that interested undergraduates could essentially "return to school early" to attend. Unfortunately, our two undergraduate members did not renew their membership this year, making our initial logic a relatively moot point. However, maybe we'll catch the eyes of some new members.

When BMC came back to us with a list of available dates, the one that best served us unfortunately fell during Obon, which does not show up on any American calendar.
