Hello everyone. Was wondering if anyone could help me find an odachi (60" [4 shaku] or longer total length, blade length 42" +). Have looked on the net and the only one I could find was a rittersteel blade costing about $300. Would like to buy for a little less than that if possible. Am also looking for shinai and/or bokken of this length for practicing. The weapon would be used mainly for kata so sharpening is not a priority. Any help you could give me on this would be greatly appreciated. I realize this is a little off topic for this forum, but I figured that a kendo stylist may have the best answer for this question. Thanks.

Cool, would you sell yourself to me for say $150.00? I will need you once or twice a week for practice and maybe a couple times a year for various occasions. Finally, I would like you to wear something that doesn't rust or corrode. Oh, before I forget, do you come with a carrying case? ;)

Nice to meet you.

I saw them there. They are close to $300 though (which is a little out of my price range). I was hoping that maybe I could find one a little cheaper, but it looks like that may be my only option. Thanks.

I do hope this is for a wall hanger. You cannot even get a good 2.5 Shaku Iaito for under US$300.

I had an opportunity to see and handle a real Nodachi this weekend in Jersey City. Bare blade with a utilitarian Saya and Tsuka (no furniture) was in excess of US$4K (Christies Auction). Very nice balance too.

Caveat Emptor! I cannot imagine paying under US$1K for a reasonable made replica Nodachi. If you are only paying 1/3 of that, then the makers are doing things to cut corners in the manufacturing. Missing in the ad is the length of the tang - a extra short tang is one common manufacturing short cut; balance may also be an issue. Also these people are not specialists in making Japanese style swords - that raises another RED FLAG for me.

P.S. I think that I would have posted this to the Iaido Forum rather than this one.

Basically it is for that. I just want one for practicing and the occasional martial arts demonstration. I am not really interested in great quality as I expect to bang it up while I practice. I would like a full tang, but again, if I need to work with a smaller tang I could live with that (As long as I can get two hands comfortably on it and not feel like it is going to slip out of my hand). I figure once I get better with it (several years down the road) I would then spend the money and get a nice one. Actually what would really be great is to find a bokken or shinai that is 4 shaku length.

www.odachi.com
www.dragonscavern.com (they've got a 62 one for 60$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!but I think this one is no good at all)

Do you attend a dojo that teaches odachi waza?

You could check out www.swordsonline.com (http://www.swordsonline.com/)Search for 'Masamune' and there is a 5' 6.5" odachi there for $299.00 (I know it's still expensive) I am uncertain as to whether this is a wallhanger or not, but it could be worth a check.

Have you seen the Choken Battojutsu Kageryu site hosted by Hyaku? If not ,go to this URL: http://www.bunbun.ne.jp/~sword/Nkage2.html It has some interesting information and pictures on there.

Unfortunately no. I study at a Tang Soo Do Dojang (Traditional Korean Martial Art) located nearby and we focus on the staff, sword, and knife. I am interested in the odachi because it is unique amongst oriental sword weapons in its carrying and drawing techniques. It is also interesting to me as it looks as though it could be adapted to the korean weapon hyung (forms).

As for the iaido/kendo schools, I would really like to join one, but unfortunately with my location (central PA) that looks like an impossibility. What I would really like to do is find a place I could travel to from time to time, learn techniques there, and then practice them on my own. I realize that this is not how training usually occurs, but with my situation being that I am far from any school, this would be the best I could hope for. I really would like to learn the weapon though as it has an interesting history and it appears that it is being lost to time.

I to had looked for a odachi that was of a good quality for a good price. i searched and searched and finaly found one. http://swordsofmight.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=413
the firt time i held the blade i knew that it was going to be a good cutter, it has ballance and a nice swing plus it has a rare double blood groove to lighten the sword even further. over all i would give the blade an 8/10 just becaus the wraping on the handle came loose after about 6 months of use.

A few things for you to consider Blain93 ... First, this thread is over three years old. Second, there's no way in hell I would ever put my life, or the life of those around me, on the line by swinging that particular sword around. Third, there are no legitimate schools of Japanese swordsmanship in the U.S. that advocate using a sword of that size. Finally, the word is "bo hi", not "blood groove".

He's cool enough to convert your binary to hex and see who else is anal enough to notice and check.:smoker:

Now gentle readers, do you take the advice of the backyard ninja community or that of somebody who actually does this in reality?

It's sooo hard to know what's right...

There's only 10 kinds of people in the world - those that understand binary, and those that don't.

there is no need for a legitimate school. i just like to cut things. not people mind you. also the term "blood groove" is a slang term. and posting while youve been awake for 23 hours is kinda weird cus you say strange things.

I was curious as to what the heck a colector was, so I looked it up. I assume that you were speaking Spanish? In that case you are quite correct in that definition number two would certainly apply ...
