So on the past weekend I came up into an interesting question.
How does one go from hidari kamae to ritsu rei?
My guess was to step back with the leading right foot into sort of like a mochikae and then just bring the naginata over into final position.

Is that right? Do you go back into hidari chudan kamae first THEN go to retsu rei?

According to Illustrated Naginata, from Shizentai to Chudan and from Chudan to Shizentai, the Chudan is Hidari Kamae (left-foot forward).

If you find yourself in Migi (right-foot forward) Chudan, then first do a standing Mochikae to come into Hidari Chudan before stepping back into Shizentai, which would be followed by Ritsu-rei.

Yes, you can do it.

However, it is not the DEFAULT condition. It is also not easy for beginners.

I have been told that, as Motodachi, to be sure to finish in Hidari Kamae before giving the command to return to Shizentai - "Nore." It makes the Motodachi look good (s/he is aware of the Kamae of the other Naginata-ka), it simplifies the Nore for the other Naginata-ka, and it is pleasing to have everyone end in Ai-Chudan.

He is right. You should go back to proper ai-chudan and then go into shizentai.
