Before kendo, I have been living my life in a dream like stupor. Always looking for something to devote my life to. This is my fifth month as a kendoka and this sunday, i will be graded for my sixth kyu. In these 5 months, I began to see myself through my practice of kendo. I continue to practice kendo because I want to see myself to improve as a person.

Good for you. dude.

Just remember that life is more than just Kendo. Take the Samurai, their purpose was war but they also concentrated on the arts like caligraphy, etc.

You can transpire what you get from Kendo to your life and it can make you a better person.

eg. right now when you train, I'll bet you go in with 100% devotion. Doing this, your kendo will improve. The same with anything in life. If you put full effort in, you will shine.

PEACE

If I may make an addition to the above - the pursuit of knowledge of the self through kendo is an admirable goal, however after five months of training I'd suggest that the sorts of questions that are pertinent to your training are
'are my feet pointing in the right direction?' and 'are my hands and feet properly coordinated?' rather than 'will I achieve enlightenment this week and how long will it take me to become one with the universe?'
Just train hard and let the pseudo-epiphany stuff take care of itself. Try not to take it all so seriously. Enjoy what you're doing - it makes everything else so much easier. Here's a semi-pertinent joke to speed you on your way (young grasshopper).

A buddhist walks up to a hot-dog vendor and says 'make me one with everything'

all the best for your grading. I'll probably be sitting on your panel.

Welcome to the forum Kev. I can see that you are one of those who lack creativity to take a better username. (without using the word "KENDO")

look for a gf? i'm just waiting for her to drop into my life. call me romantic or pathetic, doesn't really matter coz it's my life. of course i'm saying this all in a very light tone.

well considering that kendokev isn't as high up as names such as aethereon, or luminisicity (both which i don't know what they mean or whether they exist for that matter) why hasn't anyone taken it yet? ...

i seem to post threads that've already been posted.... can't really blame me, i don't have that much time going around and checking all the threads available. but thx for the short cuts to the threads regardless.

one really doesn't look for trouble, sometimes it looks for u...

Well, I don't particulaly mind repeating myself...

I took up the study of Kendo intially because of what I knew about the history of it and how its lessons fit my life. I find it to be like nothing else for me, and I get a sense of belonging amidst the rush of Kendo. I feel that in part I am doing something to preserve a great thing, and that by practicing it I can become a much better person and live by the terms I wish to, tolerance, compassion, patientence and valor.

I've been practicing for only four months now, and (I haven't been back here in a while) I have made sankyu at a week long Kendo camp in August.
