One-Handed Jodan

at www.kendovj.com there is a video of the 4th Goyokai tournament.. one guy uses one-handed jodan in there.. he holds it with his right hand near the tsuba and puts his left hand on his waist

how would you beat this? watch the video and you'll know what I mean =P

Is that even legal? I havent seen the video yet, but the visual image I'm getting looks and sounds like it shouldnt be legal.

Using a single hand to play jodan is rather unorthodox, but I can’t think of any rule which says you can’t do it.

Actually during the 1997 World Kendo Championships in Kyoto, Mr Small from Hawaii played jodan using only his right hand and scored a men cut!

I should add that the reason he plays this way is because he has no legs and he uses his left hand to push himself around.

Unfortunately I couldn’t watch the footage due to the site being under maintenance. But I’d play against it the same way I would against hidari jodan, except with one less kote to hit.

oh and by the way.. since he is holding it with his right hand near the tsuba.. he holds it with the tip angled inward (so it's pointing to the upper left).. makes hitting his right kote very difficult as well

Hmmm...I can't open the link for some reason. :confused2 How about this as a (tongue in cheek!) strategy?: Take hidari jodan. Then, with full confidence, close in quickly and hit a full-blooded harai (omote) at his shinai aiming for the tsuba area. With his shinai now out of the way, he is entirely open; he doesn't have anything to block with, for instance. Tsuki, men, do at will? :)

O.... I see your point, his right kote is protected by the handle of his shinai. Hmmm.... I don't think I've ever played anyone in this stance before, but I'll have a guess at what to do.

I'd semi in covering my men, if he trys to attack I'd attempt some oji waza, otherwise I'd try to hit what ever opens up.

how would you play hidari jodan?

I don't do anything special, just point my shinai at his left kote and hope for the best.

Easy dirty way to beat katate migi jodan. All you have to do is slide your kensaki between his tsuka and his kote. Then you flip your shinai up, and his shinai goes flying out of his hands. You have so much leverage that it is nearly impossible for anyone to hold on to their shinai, especially if they are holding it near the tsuba. If you don't want to do that, just do kaeshi waza, or tsuki. If he is holding it near the tsuba, he doesn't have much reach and his kime won't be as good either.

It's easy. Just do seme with the kasumi kamae. They can't do anything.

hit you (unless you suck). Run up and there you go!

3. hit kote men and when they block the men knock the shinai out
4. throw a yoko kote at the index finger. When the shinai goes down

haha sounds good.. but when you do kote men he's going to get you with men when you're going for the kote.. it's just so fast

you hit the kote in the in between the tsuba and the naka yui kinda like a suri age but not really. you are not trying to get point. whats you're trying to do is hit so that he has to block, if he blocks you have a clear path to his shinai, men, or whatever you want to do...well you can always do a yoko kote or yoko men.
