Hello

I want to buy a white bougu (this one -> http://kendoshop.com/eshop/index.php?mode=subdetail&num=216&flag=catedetail)
I have been informed that the white bougu turns into soft yellow later on and produces a bad result. Is it true?

Thanks in advances

Lara

I haven't seen white bogu turn yellow. If you like it, go for it.

Thanks for your prompt reply

I am also worried that during the combats my white kotes can be dyed of blue when rubbing with the oponent ones which are normally indigo. I have heard this happens often.

If so, can the kotes be easily cleaned?

Thanks in advance

Lara

If your practicing in a club where everyone else wears blue your going to get a lot of smudges over time. You will get them on the men buton and the tare. Never saw anyone be able to clean it off. What I have seen is people use blue kote for daily practice and only drag out the white ones during taikai.
If you want white bogu then get it.

Aside from the problem with cleaning blue dye from other peoples bogu, it's hard to find white bogu of good quality. Most of the sets are lower quality, the more senior women tend to wear the indigo bogu.

My Girlfriend has that very same Bougu, and has had it now for about a year and a half. It certainly has not turned yellow, but there is some blue dye that has rubbed off on the Kote, and a little on the men buton. However, this does not really impede the look of the white bougu, infact i think it looks a little better 'lived in' than totally shiny and new. Anyway, she is a member of this forum also, so maybe she will post about it.

I haven't seen white bogu turn yellow. *snip*.

Me neither...I have seen very low quality 'white' bogu sets made from some poor quality materials that do have a yellow tinge to them, but these are cheap sets...they are yellow to start with, ive never seen white 'turn' yellow

Hello

I'm 'the girlfriend' referred to.

My bogu is white and I do not think that it is poor quality! I love it in fact, it has certainly not gone yellow and even though I should probably look after it better than I do, it is still in good condition - (D'Artagnan will not be happy when he reads that)

The cote have gone fairly blue and I have got some blue on the men, however, I like this, too new looks like you've hardly trained. I would like to replace my cote by the end of this year with perhaps some slightly better ones in white that I have seen available and have a new white pair and my older white pair.

I have had nothing but nice comments and good attention from my bogu (to my face anyway) and I hope it continues, and doesn't become too popular, of course.

I have seen some yellow ones that look pretty bad, but I think these must be poorer quality or something and I'm agree they are like that to begin with.

Anyway good luck

(Hi Nishi)

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that that bogu was poor quality, just if you want a really good one (top-line machine stitched or hand stitched) they're hard to find. For example, in the Koei catalog the top-quality white bogu is about the same quality as G-20, which is one of their lower-end 4 mm sets, about half the price of the top-quality machine stitched sets. It's certainly still a good enough set for many people, but more advanced people are usually looking for a little nicer quality than that.

Go ahead.

I have been informed that the white bougu turns into soft yellow later on and produces a bad result. Is it true?
Only if you urinate on it.
Who informed you?
Sounds like this is your first set of bogu. Get whatever you want. If appearance is important to you, it may be better for you to get blue bogu.

Maybe what he meant was it wasn't "ichiban" quality. Medium... low... poor... sh*tty. It's all in the same boat when your bogu is hand-made.

I would say if appearance is important to you it still makes no difference, I think my appearance is better in white! Especially if this is going to be your first bogu set, as I imagine you won't want to be spending a great deal anyway or be going for major hand stitched stuff.

(Unless your a - sorry what's the phase used on here? - "rich boy show off!")???

I don't know much about Bogu (I practice Iaido) but they look pretty cool.

Oh, white bogus are so cool! :cheerful: They are really fascinating. (BTW, Lara schön dich kennenzulernen! :D ) You just started kendo (me either about 3 months ago) and you are thinking about your own bogu. That’s a little bit fast (my opinion). When do you need your own bogu in your club? Will you buy a white one? My little dream is to buy a white one (when the time will arrive … in couple of years). :o I never thought about the mentioned problems (turning yellow and going blue).:emb: I was very wise from you to start this thread. But I researched a little bit the internet and I have found out that the white bogus are more expensive that the “normal” one (as Niel Gendzwill-sama mentioned). So I’m asking is it better to have a white bogu or a "normal" bogu for the same price and better quality? It’s tricky, but I would prefer the white one. :D

Kendoshop isn’t the only shop which offers white bogus. There are much more shops (like Koei, Kendomecca, Fuji-sports, etc. ). :glasses:

Serenity

P.S. I have seen a very awesome white bogu with white do. Very cool combination. :cheeky:

i'd stick w/ regular indigo considering that it's usually cheaper than the white bogu even though they are the same stitch interval

In terms of quality I really do not feel that at this stage it matters. Everyone changes their bogu or parts of their bogu throughout their Kendo career so as a first set as long as it is of a reasonable standard I do not think it is important. Also I believe that 'higher quality' therefore a smaller stitch is harder to 'break in' perhaps something that you could do without in your first set, ignoring the cost. Even if you get an indigo set a doubt you will be getting any better quality than what is available in white anyway, as its your first set.

I think that it just comes down to personal preference. There is a wider variety to pick from in indigo but as an indecisive Libran I was happy for the decisions to either be made for me or be more limited otherwise I'd probably still be choosing. White is rarer and I like being girly, and I like people being able to tell that I am a girl if in a crowd, in full bogu, at a distance and I like attention.

There is no place in kendo for show-offs.

Hai Hai, I dont like white Bogu either, but If she likes it and people make white Bogu for selling - why she can't have it? Let people do what they want and don't insult them.
Show-offs are more welcome in Kendo then insulting. Right?
Peace.

That's true. Therefore, it is a good thing that she bought white bogu. Don't forget to flash it up with custom men chichigawa.

I have seen Kendomecca, but the white set doesn't say how about his mm. The set of kendoshop have 3 mm.

Koei.. what is the url?

Fuji-sports: It's appears all in japanese, I don't find the link for english traduction :(

Thanks in advance.

Koei's website has is a picece of two minute crap they put together. What u want is the new 2004 Koei catalog which has hundreds of mouthwatering products. I managed to get one from a sempai at my dodjo. U probably have to be contact with koei to get some.

If you want their catalog just ask Koei to send it to you (if´s free). I wrote them a e-mail and the catalog came in a few days. I was really surprised, because I didn´t expect to get one.

Serenity

P.S. The Koei catalog is amazing! Worth looking.

A few days late, but I'm slightly curious. How many girls only wear white bogu? I just started to wear armor and I'm getting my hakama, gi and armor in indigo. Is it traditional for girls to wear white? To tournaments I've gone to, I've seen either all indigo or white gis with black hakamas. (And sometimes fun coloured dos. :silly: )

Is it traditional for girls to wear white?I don't know how many, but in the UK I would say very few and quite often in one or the other, as in white gi and hakama and indigo bogu or vice versa. I've only seen about 4 or 5 in one of those combinations or all white including myself.

I have been told that it was once traditional for women to wear white but I don't think that it is still the case.
