I was recently looking around the Kendo World forums and realized that there are no threads for the music lovers in the world like me. For instance when ever I practice at home or with my friend (who has practiced for a few years more then me and is the one who got me started) I need to have some good fast pased music in the background or it just doesn't feel the same. How about the rest of you and who do you listen to?

At home, I will sometimes put on Portland Taiko's "Big Bang", or when I'm really strange, it's Tadaaki Ono and the Tokyo Gakuso Ensemble. Saibara puts me in the mood. Then again, Queen works wonders for motivation before practice too.

Once I'm at practice, mostly I listen to Tanaka Sensei encouraging me to move faster.

I keep my head focused on my kendo. I love music but it's more of a distraction because kendo isn't a constant tempo activity. You want to control your kendo, not the music to control you.

Niels, nice selection.

I never listen to music whilst practicing, but i do listen to a lot of music – this has turned into a sort of general music thread anyway.

Soundgarden is a good recommendation. Kim Thayil rules! Here are some more associative leads to follow:

Primus, Tool, Messhugah, System of a Down > King Crimson

Roots Manuva > DJ Vadim, DJ Krush, Def Jux label, Wu-Tang-related

Amon Tobin > Squarepusher, Ninjatune label

These days, i mostly dig “world music,” abstract hiphop, and old skool jazz/soul/funk.

I DJ as a hobby/odd job. Here’s a 45-min. track-list from yesterday’s set, FWIW:

TJ Rehmi - Dil Mai Durad

Cinematic Orchestra feat. Fontella Bass – Evolution

D’Angelo, Femi Kuti + Macy Gray feat. Roy Hargrove, Nile Rodgers, The Soultronics + Positive Force – Water No Get Enemy

Mo’Horizons – Como e o ar

Baaba Maal – Souka Nayo (Thievery Corp. mix)

Liquid Lounge – Lemon Tea? (black tea edit)

Master Musicians of Jajouka feat. Bachir Attar / Talvin Singh – You Can Find The Feeling

Squarepusher – Iambic 9 Poetry

Nancy Sinatra – Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)

The Herbaliser – Something Wicked This Way Comes

Missy Misdemeanor Elliott – I Can’t Stand The Rain

Prince – Boys & Girls

Timbaland & Magoo feat. – Indian Flute

Alex Is My Bro – Space.Action (Les Demon Flowers Combo)

Beverly Hills Ninja Soundtrack – “You’re a Ninja?”

DJ Krush – Ryu Tou

Indian Vibes – Mathar (Discovery of India mix)

Stevie Wonder – Superstitious

Rock on! :cool2:

not-I,

Have you got the 1 Giant Leap album? I think that can be called "world music". I'm not entirely sure what "world music" is. Anyway, it's a good album and worth checking out. I think Baaba Maal features on a couple of tracks.

Thanks for the tip, sounds familiar. I think i may have heard a few things from that album that i liked.

As to "world music," i put it in quotes for a reason. It used to refer to traditional music from around the world (as a replacement for "ethnic", a rather ethnocentric term as it basically look the "West" as a basis of comparison), but gradually became associated with a number of collaborations between international producers and musicians. These days, I think it means more or less anything and everthing, and that's fine by me. When i do a "world music" set, i like to throw a spicey mix in the sonic wok: Indian-inspired triphop, modern afrobeat, some salsa, abstract hiphop, some jazz, perhaps a Moroccan oud solo, and maybe a Japanese pop song or Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."

I'm optimistic that labels, genres and styles mean less and less to more and more people who simply prefer quality in whatever music they happen to be listening to or creating.

I hope so too; there are quite a lot of people who are a little snobbish when it comes to different genres and styles. All this means is that they miss out on a load of music that they might like, but wouldn't listen to normally, because it's not 'cool' or whatever.

a lot of you mentioned meshuggah, i was wondering: are we speaking about the same band??? namely the metal band?
i know the "destroy, erase, improve" album and, phew, that's NOT quite easy listening. also i wonder why you mentioned meshuggah and no other metal bands? sorry for the thinking in drawers, (LOL does this terminology even exist in english? :D) but i was too lazy to specify the main characteristics in more words, so metal is just fine ^^

i guess Meshuggah is also world music, as weirdos all over the world listen to and like it. yeah, metal \m/, we need labels to communicate, the point is not to get attached to them. everyone needs a little metal occassionally, and Meshuggah is a good choice. name some others! :evil:

mudhoney and soundgarden were once my favourite favourite bands! oh, i loved them *beaming with joy* - chris cornell has such a powerful voice! *melt away* combined with kim thayils guitars and matt camerons drumming - that rocks :evil:. IMO chris cornell is not as authentic with audioslave as he was with soundgarden. audioslave has an artificial sound IMO. you can feel that this band has been set up and has not developed - the music does not come from the heart.

so niels, if you like chris cornell's voice then i'd highly recommend you to check out soundgarden!

some metal bands i like to listen to are
* bolt thrower
* immortal
* runemagick
* vader
* hypocrisy
* a little bit of gorgoroth
* sure there are some more, can't recall them now

my main interest lies in stoner rock though. bands like
* kyuss
* spiritual beggars
* astroqueen
* fu manchu
* monster magnet
* orange goblin
* cathedral
* the atomic bitchwax
* mushroom river band
* sheavy
* mannhai

so everything that is groovy, heavy rock preferrably with a heavy voice - heavy as lead ^^

Actually, I never listen to music when practicing kendo, exercising, etc.

The only times I really listen to music are on my computer, in the car, walking to school, school, not really when im doing stuff that needs my attention.

Well, as a little lad I grew up with such greats as Pink Floyd, the Jimi Hendrix Expeirience, David Bowie, Syd Barrett, the Cream, the Beatles, of course, and the stones. I was, and still am, also quite into The Doors, who proved to me that you 'continentals' still make some great poetry, and the Velvet Underground. Bob Dylan also figured strongly into that.

Then I fell in love with jazz and the blues.

I listen to everything from Charlie Parker, Howlin Wolf, and Coltrane to Steely Dan, David Sanborn, who I have had the immense priveledge to meet, and the doobie brothers. As for the more contemporary, A student of mine recently gave me a Jason Mraz CD that I rather enjoy, and I am also currently enraptured by such bands as Radiohead, Theivery Corporation, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blur, the Goo Goo dolls, and the Barenaked ladies, as well as some of the mod psychedelic brit rock scene.

I'm also loving Eric Clapton, and have since I heard him first in the Cream in london in '68.

Well, when you're an old bugger like me...

I'm sure there are some class videos out there, or DVDs and what have you, if you look hard enough. Slowhand still has it, though. I recently picked up his newest offering, Me and Mr. Johnson, which is a collection of covers of the heavy delta blues of Robert Johnson. It has recieved some mixed reviews, but I think it really does both men justice as masters of their crafts.
