Naginata ranking goes as follows:
Dangai (mudansha): 6-1 Kyu
Yudansha: 1-5 Dan
Shogo: Renshi, Kyoshi, Hanshi
Kendo used this scheme after WWII, but at some point switched to a 1-9 Dan Yudansha scheme with additional teaching titles of Renshi, Kyoshi, and Hanshi.
In ZNKR Kendo, Iaido and Jodo, Renshi, Kyoshi, and Hanshi are titles; in AJNF, they are Naginata ranks.

I am sorry to say, but from what I heard she was the only non-Japanese to pass her exam. However my sources could be incorrect.

I did not know that, thank you. I had ASSuME'd Naginata Shogo were recognition of teaching ability the way they are in kendo. Although there have been some interesting disussion on protocol over the years. When sensei line up, who is senior -- a Kyoshi, roku-dan or a Renshi, nana-dan? So the shogo are not "just" titles, I would say.

Actually there were some 10 Dan kendo-ka. There are none living, present day.
The decision was made a few years back to cap the ranks at 8 Dan, plus shogo. All 9-, 10 Dan were awarded by judgement of their peers, as are present day shogo. 8 Dan is the highest of the rank by examination in kendo. There are some 9 Dans still active in kendo.
FYI. Some resources on kendo ranking.

Congratulation... that's a great news.

Only 3 kyoshi in the USA? That's a lot less than I expected. But as kendo is a relatively "new" in the US/Europe it can't be too long before there are more.
Kendo has a long tradition in Taiwan (probably dating back to the days of Japanese colonial rule) and in my dojo (30-50 people) alone we have 2 Renshi, 3 Kyoshi and 1 Hanshi. Although we don't get taught by the Hanshi very often as he is always tending to the first-timers. For some reason Kendo is not as popular anymore and we had to really work hard to attract the young people (myself included).
