Hey, I just joined here, but I've been reading posts for a while, and I read a lot about people having their Shinai break within months of purchase. I'm not in Kendo, but only because the closest Dojo is 3 hours away (so I train in the only Martial Art in my town, Taekwondo), but I have a Japanese friend who teaches Kendo. When he first visited, he left me two Shinai as a gift. These were not brand new Shinai. This was more than six years ago. Today, they are still intact, which I suppose is due to me not using them in regular Kendo practice, and the care that he put into them before they were mine.

I do use them though. My friends and I are all interested in Japanese culture, and many a weekend I dress in my Hakama, and we meet at the park to "train" (Please do not take me for some sword-fanatic who wants to fight "movie-style". I like history and culture, and like someone else I saw here, do not wish to re-enact "Kill Bill"). Some of my friends hit quite hard, but my Shinai are not splintering yet, to my knowledge. What should I do to maintain this kind of quality?
