Will a good, new (expensive?) men protect against lumps in the head from men cuts? I'm borrowing the club bogu. Will a mousemat glued in the top help? Sometimes I feel like a baby seal getting clubbed in the head...I know there are men protectors but I don't have enough time to order it before next training.

Well, even with a 1.0bu Hand-Stitch Nagasashi Men with additional sorbothane insert, I still get lumps every now and then.

FWIW :D

Nah, it's not always ji-geiko. Everyone has to be the crash-test dummy for exercises. I had the same problem at first...lumpy head and headaches - not good - and fixed it by padding the top of the men a little. Sure, try the mouse pad, but don't glue it, just insert it in the fold in the front. If it doesn't work, you can always get a fancy-ass men-protector later. Of course, sometimes you'll really feel it anyway, protector or no protector, but no sense in encouraging brain damange.

Here is a trick I use when I am the hitting dummy and I am getting hit really hard in the head. As the shinai is about to strike your men, tilt your head up just enough so that the shinai strikes the top of the men gane (face cage) rather than your lumpy head.It will chew up the other guy's shinai a bit but at least it does not hurt.

Don't know if I'd recommend that, IMHO :D

First, chewing up the partner's shinai is dangerous for your health, not his.

Second, it is dangerous for your partner's pocket book.

Third, makes habit for exposing throat...stop-tsuki = no voice for a while.

FYI, that's how I got my first dent on my carbon shinai.

you don't have to raise you men very high at all, not even enough that anyone else notices you are doing it, and certainly not enough to expose the tsuki.

Also I would never do it durring jigeiko. I will take my lumps then. I just use it when I am motodachi and a beginer is really cranking it.

Better their shinai than my brains!

Maybe, maybe not. Some people just can't take pain. But having an expensive, new, good men will definately make you feel better.

you always have time, enough time to post a thread on kendo world forum then you have enough time to place an online order. it's a small investment for your safety in light of your efforts to continue practice kendo!

I have already ordered the men pad. Hope I get it before the next training session!

why dont you all jast don't say you opponent not to hit so hard? good men _should_ protect you head, if you had a pain in your head every hit, it looks like you opponent did very wrong men cuts.

and if someone tilt his head when i strike men, i stop train with him. this way he is broking _my_ shinai

I don't get any lumps. I do get headaches and mini-concussions.
