View Full Version : How to tie TARE?

Konnichiwa everyone! I know it’s a silly question, but I have really problems with tying the tare. We got brand new bogu sets from the AJKF a week ago, so everyone in our club has a bogu now. :D I always had the “tare problem” and I was told so many times, how to put tare on, that I’m embarrassed asking it over and over again (it’s very stupid, I know). But it seems that I’m the only one with this kind of a problem. :emb:
So far as I know, the tare is wrapped around the back… But every single time, when I put the tare on and I stand up, the tare slips from my hips and the whole constitution is not stabile anymore. :mad2: It’s really frustrating. I correct the tare every second and I cannot concentrate on the practise. :square:
When I tie the tare on the hips it slips up but when I tie it around my waist it doesn’t slips up, but it’s not protecting my hips (one time I tied the tare around my waist and after the practise my right hip was bloody read and the next day it turned blue, violet, grey :dead: ).
Can anyone help me? I would be very happy. I hope I’m not asking too much. Domo arigato gozaimasu!

Sit in seiza and put on the tare on, wrapping the ribbons around your waist, never around your hips - or it will always slip. Cross them over once behind you and pull them forward as tight as possible while pulling in your stomach. Then flip up the center zekken flap and tie the tare ribbons there in the middle, as you would a shoe-lace. Flip the zekken flap back down, put on the rest of your bogu and you're ready to go.
It is important that the tare bands are as tight as possible, even if it feels uncomfortable and leaves some red marks around your waist after training. That way, your tare stays where it should and doesn't slip to one side or another or downward off your hips. It also helps keep your ab muscles tightened during keiko.
If the tare, as tied around the waist where it should be tied, is not fully covering your hips, it is too small, but i doubt this. The tare only offers a little extra protection down there, and if someone misses your do by a mile and smacks you hard on the hip, you're going to get a bruise, tare or no tare.
Make sure you get this right as soon as possible. Having to repeatedly adjust your bogu during keiko interferes with your practice and gets on everyone else's nerves.

The on-line kendo equipment manual from the Japanese Bogu maker's council indicates that one should pass the tare himo between the koshi-ita and the keikogi in back. This should help keep the tare from falling down. Here is the link:

hope that helps. Let us know how you get on.
Good luck,

The manual shows that this is incorrect. The diagram with the O is correct and the X is not. The tare himo should always be on the outside of the hakama.
To help tighten the tare raise up on your toes and sit up on your heels while putting it on. It is difficult to get it fully tightened while sitting in seiza. Or you can do like most of my Japanese friends in Japan do and put it on standing up in the changing room....

So right. I just checked it. So much for good semiotics. Try asking some of the more senior students for help.

Not-I...It is important that the tare bands are as tight as possible, even if it feels uncomfortable and leaves some red marks around your waist after training.
I don't think you should put it too tight or it could course stomach problems during practice. I prefer bougu tight knots but loose fitting especially the Dou. I think I remember about old western clothing. If you wear loose clothing like loose leather in Oliver cromwell’s army if a sword hits you it will hit your clothing rather than your skin. And it works too! but it does help being fin like me :).
Any way thanks Not-I for info some one at our Dojyo was a having alittle trouble with Tare. Maybe he is wearing under his hips like you said..

Serenity,
You must be completely retarded. I cannot see how the tare is harder than tying the hakama, men or do. It's the easiest of all parts.

Thanks very much for your help! You all were very helpful. Thanks for taking you time to help me. Thanks to you all, I now know how to put the tare on. I practised (putting the tare on) the whole afternoon and I hope it will work tomorrow by kendo practise. I will follow your advices.
Not-I, domo arigato for your extensive post and for your detailed explanation. :cheerful:
Brain-sama, thank you fort he link :cheeky: (http://www6.big.or.jp/~budogu/book.html (http://www6.big.or.jp/~budogu/book.html)); I already have this manual, but it didn’t helped very much, because it doesn’t says where exactly the tare is put. :emb:

P.S. Mystic_kendoka -> I have seen that kind of bogu in the Koei catalogue -> it’s very funny. If your solutions won’t work, I’m going to buy one of this funny bogus. (Just kidding!) :D

hi serenity, i just would like to add my 2 cents how i put it on :)
i sit in seiza and put the "haraobi" or "gutbelt" - as it's called in the manual reffered to - as near as possible to my thights.
tell us how your tare behaved ^^

As rude and unhelpful as usual. Bogu doesn't fit women very well sometimes. Also if you are slim and the tare is quite big or stiff you can have the same problems as she is describing. Finally she may not have the hand strength to tie it quite tight enough, particularily if as before she is slim and the tare is large.
Serenity, I suggest you ask other women in your dojo if there are any. Also one helpful thing is to make sure you pull the straps quite hard after you cross them behind your back. Don't wait until you've made the first part of the knot to pull things snug.

Thanks Neil-sama for your nice words. :cheerful: I have the exact problems you describe. I got a smaller tare, but it very hard for me to tie it tight, because I’m not very strong. :emb: I cannot ask any other girl, because I’m the only one in our club. But after such great advices I got from all of you, today I didn’t had any problems with my tare. :D

Tare for girls as well as do is little diiferent from those for men.
Ooops Serenity, I have no idea whether you are girl or not  but if you are, you should get a ladies tare and do, this might help. Ehm.... if you are not, than this is the most embarrasing post in this forum, thank you for your attention :D

Mr.Tvola pelase don´t worry, I´m a girl. About the bogu for girls; I will buy it in a year or two; right now I use a brand new club bogu and there is no need for me to get one. :emb: But thanks anyway.

Hi Serenity,
Some "personal" experience about tying tare:
1. Tare feels like a kind of support for my back and upper body... uhmm kinda like people using supporter for their thigh/achilles to get more power... It's not an apron so better had it as tight as possible, especially if you don't have (beer) belly like those guys. Otherwise during practice your tare is going to move around your waist, or that the himo become too loose.
You should have some space for breathing... if you are out of breath you can "rest you belly" there... Also if you tuck your hand in front the tightest part of your tare should be around 2-3 inches below your belly button. (ok my experience... not sure if its the general case)
2. It should be tied at an angle, with the back slightly higher than the front... because it's not a belt for your trousers! uhmm, the himo at the back should be below the board (koshiita) on the back of your hakama.
3. Try to make an S curve with the 1st+5th tare flaps - those at your sides. Where the S will make some space for your hip bone... remember the tare himo at your sides should be "just" above your hip bone...
See if you still have problems. :)
