In on Dojyo that I go to and am going to tomorrow (I hope it is on Emit.. :()
There is some one who does Naginata self taught (Emit :)) and I do Nito also self taught and it is great fun! :D. I found some old football/soccer shin protectors that seem to be suitable but I wanted to know how you would wear your hakama? I tried tucking them into the shin gards.. I've seen photos such as on Mingshi's sight with people with hakama half tucked in at the front but not back.

This looks a little sloppy to me and in an old Samurai photo it seemed they were tucked in at both sides.

Any one know how to wear Naganata shin protectors/Suneate?

Thanks for any replyes.

For what I have been taught and have seen everywhere else so far..
Only the front is tucked in and the back of you leg is not covered directly by your hakama.

Basicly sit on 1 knee and extend the other leg slightly forward.
Then lift 1 line (sorry dont know english word) up a bit so the hakama folds inward making a shape resembling a triangle.
This is when you put the sune ate on.. then first fasten the lower part , then
the upper part while making sure the back of you leg is free.

It is probably easier explained while showing it but I hope this sorta makes it clear.

Just as a warning, I would not recommend using soccer shin gards. Suneate (should) protect pretty much all of your lower leg, accept for the very back (achilles & calf). You could get seriously injured if he were to hit you where you were not protected.
As for the tucking, it's hard to explain but if you were to tuck in all of your hakama you wouldn't be very mobile.

Thanks for replys all, I was just interested how you put on Suneate though I don't do Nagainata. If you tuck the Hakama in at the top of the Shin gurds rather than the bottom it does seem to work. It is also interesting to me because I am interested in Samurai armor but I think they used a different Hakama for that..

Musha.. I have some Sune-ate that I will bring to the class if you wish, they should just fit you, as they are a bit too small for me.

As for how they fit.. well through trial and error I can now get them looking like the guys on www.naginata.nl (http://www.naginata.nl/), and more importantly, you can wear them and still be upwardly mobile. :)
