I was watching a clip a few months back from an East Coast(US) Kendo comp. and it had a person doing a very strange kamae. Basically he was holding the shinai in his right hand, midway up the tsuka in jodan, with his left hand placed down below his dou.
Footwork was standard right foot foward and he would strike from this position. Very odd kamae but quite effective as he made it to the finals. The final match(which wasn't shown) was between him and a jodan fighter.
Anyone else know/seen what this kamae is?

I think I have heard of people who have crippled left hands/arms so they hold the shinai in jodan with their right instead of their left.

I think this is just a version of Jodan; officially it would still be a Jodan kamae because of the position of the shinai. Unfortunately I can't remember its full name....

Sounds like a tweaked migi-jodan. He's holding the halfway down the tsuka to use the bottom part of it to cover the right kote. That way, the only real available target is tsuki.
(And do, if you can get close enough).

you're talking about the one-handed jodan that I posted about.. the video is of the highlights from that competition.. he only competed in the team matches so the match of him vs. jodan wasn't the finals.. they faked me out too~ =P
anyways if you go to www.kendovj.com and get the rest of the video, the guy that went into jodan was someone he had just scored a point on.. and he beats him 2-0

right click -> view source -> ctrl+f, type in wmv -> copy and paste the link into a program that can record streaming videos, such as Hi-Net Recorder
What about making it even more complicated ?

Well. from what i "think" i know, that is a sort of attack position. I dont know the name. There is also another one where you have you left foot in front of you right, and your shinai is pointed behind you at an angle. With one sweeping motion you could block all attacks, i believe it is a defensive position. Correct me if im wrong guys.

Yeah. I met this japanese sensei in Bologna during a 17th euro championships goodwill geiko and he had a problem in his left hand so he did that particular kind of jodan kamae. And sh** he was really powerfull with it. Almost untouchable.
Fight the power. Use your brain.
