Four.
And for those with eight lines, I have come up with a new name. Glitter tare is any tare with 8 lines of embroidery.

Man,

you should see my new tare, it has little blue and red flashing leds across the embroidery. Trying to find a dojo that opens after midnight now.

Louis

Actually, one sensei explained to me that the tare embroidery lines are added protection against low do-uchi and other wandering cuts. More lines is more protection, its not just a designer feature.

When i started kendo, I thought they might mean 'dan-grade'...lol!!

After seeing this post, I had to count the lines on my tare at last practice just to remind myself. And you know what I found? Red and blue flashing lights, too!

It's the MC-39 from Mori Budo. The tare is pretty flimsy but the men is heavy and the kote is well padded. It's very "non-flashy" with plain white leather trim instead of "sakura printed" leather trim. But, I've seen flimsy 6-line tare and "stiff as a board" 5-line tare.
I will karate chop you in the cajones if we ever meet. Do not insult my tare.

Seven here. I don't think the embriodery is useful as padding, but the more lines (therefore the lower down the embroidery goes), the stiffer each "plate" seems to be.
