I think my bogu is pretty cool

I firstly rent one from my club,

then bought a cheap pair of kote .
then got an other pair of kote (cheap kote from ebogu) when I won a tournament in Waterloo University (but lost them a few months ago...)

2 years after that received an old men from a korean friend,
,some sensei in Japan gave me an old pair of kote out of pity, because he could see all my fingers when i was wearing the old ones.
then my friend gave me his old bogu (men, dou and tare ) that he couldnt bring with him to Japan.

Plus my hakama and gi were given to me by my teacher.

hahhaaha kendo is not so expensive

its seriously worth it.. its about a school, a high school, hence its name, and a new student arrives, after being expelled from his 9th school, when he arrives theres a sort of gang war going on between the different teams, there is the judo team, the hockey team, kendo team, rugby team, wrestling team etc. they're all trying to get some book that gives ultimate power over the school..

the new student has these 'powers' that he got when he was struck by lightning as he fell into a tank of electric eels, and so all the teams want him becuz of his powers etc.

its really good, the kendo is good too.. apart from the fact that they get beaten up a lot..

Here is a photo of the family doh collection. The oldest one from 1979 is loaned out and missing from the photo. Top is my wife and son's and the bottom are mine, 3 of which were gifts.

The one in the middle on top is my son's and it changes color from brownish gold to purple depending on the light.

that's a lot of do. you bought all of those?

~taganahanNo. On the bottom row two were gifts (the sa-me doh and the candy apple red one) and one I received for winning the goodwill at the U.S. tourney. The two white ones on the top are old. The all white one is from my wife‘s first set in 1979. The r & w is a cheap one we got later and the mune is pretty soft. We use them for loaners.

The small ones are my sons’. The red one my older son will outgrow soon. The candy apple one is my younger son’s. He wanted purple but I could not get it.

Five of the doh are 20 years old or more. The light blue one on the bottom is from 1981. My black ’79 is loaned out right now. There are 5 fiber, 2 yamato, and 6 bamboo doh.

I tend to collect things. You never know when you might need to loan something out.

This forum thread ended up being a mockery and joke.

Sorry about that, Swiss.

It's just that there were so many threads about bogu a few months ago, including with pictures (e.g. the "Do you have flashy bogu?" thread) which made this one kind of redundant. I think we needed some comic relief.

Having said that, i really liked the pictures Frederico posted.

you should try and get a bogu while you're still at japan and while you're still near to korea cause the shipping fees to north america kills. i was a checking out a bogu at e-kendo.com and the shipping fee from korea to vancouver was US$77. bummer!

Well I figure this old bogu of mine will work for the year I am in america, maybe for the year and 1/2 I will be forced to live there.. 9_9; but then it is back to Japan for me, for a full time Job, and nightly kendo practice again. Once I save up, then I will buy my dream bogu.. ^_^ And maybe by thenI will be a Shodan too.. Then I will have a reason for a nice bogu.

Well, if my bogu didn't give them the shivers.. then my kendo skills would. ^_^ (I am trying to sound like I am scary in a good way.. like super intimadating..) But if not, yeah.. any rich boy would wonder why i can play kendo in something "that unsafe" and "not beautiful"...

But it's my baby... I treat it better than anyone else in my dojo treats their bogu..

I checked your birthday and that white doh is older than you are. If you ever come to Seattle you can come to practice and wear it. It is just an inexpensive fiber doh, but has held up really well. We still use it for a loaner when need be.

Sempai are not responsible for club equipment. Not all dojo have bogu for rental or loan.

webjunkie401
30-07-2004, 08:43 AM
Let me explain the situation a bit better. Out club is new as of last year.

Since we practice jointly with one of the neighboring universities, we got a grant to buy equipment for playing nice, as it were.

So, we put in a large order or gear for both the club and the individuals in the club.

Well, the guy happens to be our club president, so he's the only one that cane make the order, and he just kept forgetting to.

Hai_hai

Well, the guy happens to be our club president, so he's the only one that cane make the order, and he just kept forgetting to.
Your club got a grant? That's serendipidous. Most people have to wear used, sweated in, smelly, club bogu.

webjunkie401
30-07-2004, 12:07 PM
It isn't a big grant (considering it's for both the UNC-CH and the Duke University Kendo Clubs).

So they're kinda paying us to play nicely together, except during ACC basketball season, then all bets are off.

But until those come in, there are only a few loaner bogu from those individuals that have extra.

Also, it helps those of use that can't afford to be rich-boy show offs study kendo.

I was looking at the colour of the kote.. beautiful.

To those that have owned high quality bogu for many years, are yours fading to this pretty colour? I have used my set for the last couple years, it is a cheaper set, and instead of fading to a blue, it is going to a purplish-grey.. kind of like the colour of cheap Gi after several years. (not the #10 000 kind)

My next set, I want to use for a long long time, and eventually hope that the colour turns to this. :)

As long as we're talking about bogu, I have a question:

Does anyone know what the quality of Kwon's bogu set is?

I was just wondering because I tried it on at a Kwon store and it semmed a little.....cheap. They only have certain sizes(S,M,L,XL), so you can't give them your exact measurements.

Thanks,

my bogu consists of parts from 4 different sets. Men and Tare were given by the ZNKR's program, they are 6mm mine bogu from chiba bogu. Doh is a very nice yamato with a nice firm mune(that doesn't sound right) made of leather with a beautiful design (like pin-stripe only without the stripes), the left kote is like the one on frederico's photos and is very flexible but not very resistant and the right kote is a beautiful kote, all leather hand-made, it's like the expensive ones from chiba.
