View Full Version : BOGO,BOGU,BOGU.HOW $ , WHO HAS THE BEST?...

I see alot of kendoka always asking about bogu. it is definetly a huge affection to us all. when i first started training in korea the back of the dojang was filled "roof high" with old bogu. you name it ,they had it.i remember asking the sensei about it and he told me not to worry that bogu was really cheap.....i said ok. then i took a trip to pusan and saw several bogu hanging up in windows, at the dry cleaners and so on and so on. i figured i would not buy because of the sheer volume i figured america would be the same. afterall iam an american ...but i never paid attention to kendo before....well let me put aside all of the doubt.

bogu from japan is always more expensive....the labor rates there are higher than other countries. you might pay 800 for 5 mm bogu.

bogu from korea is cheaper because of their economy and labor. in pusan alot of phillipino migrant workers were machine stitching the stuff. i saw a good 2mm set for 500 usd ...and if i would have wanted a discount i would just say "onii kaka-jusayo" and i guarantee i could have walked it for 425...thats good pricing..

bogu from america- 90 percent is made in china..you can always tell if you look inside the men there is a little china stamped somewhere on that metal

so you be the judge ...if you have money to burn...buy tozando, sehyoun, chiba or mitsubshi even koei........

but if you are on a budget try kendosale, kendoshop, or make a friend in korea ....it might help...

sorry for the ridiculus ploy about korea ...but i love that place and the people..........SGT.TILLMAN/SOLDIER

yea that is pretty funny about us koreans...it's all about discounts haha

Could you not type everything in bold?

Why pay more for the same thing. I agree.
Why not pay less to look like a rich-boy show-off? Super idea.

Yes, I paid more for less. I got 4mm bogu for over $700 by Mori Budo. Next time, I think I will get something that costs less for more. Japanese bogu is over-rated (at least the machine-stitched stuff)

Mystics only 15years old and only what 7-8 mos of kendo experience? Real tough talkerso what? what does knowing the korean language have to do with age and experience in kendo? seeing that he is korean...

Wout
30th June 2004, 07:25 PM
yeah wtf you on about, I would think a korean would know korean. When did age or kendo expierience come into play in knowing a language. seeing what bullet said I think his question was legit.

BTW Soldier seems to be incredibly touchy, one little remark and he's off. plus why does he type everything in bold, and his name in caps it looks like he's shouting all the time. (well maybe he's mad at something)

What does "onii kaka-jusayo" mean?

:)

To me it is not very polite to use the abbreviation "wtf" in a question you are posing to someone you don't know. It makes your question sound like "what stupidity are you telling now". I am sure it wasn't ment that way, but it could give that impression to someone.

Hello all,

As 'JameB' mentioned.
When asking as question on the intenet (forums, chat rooms etc), it is more
appropriate to ask without the acronyms that some of us encountered through the years. It will obviously confuse some people, as it showed here.

SGT.Tillman, I'm sure didn't realize the forum or general internet etiquette on such things. i.e.-Bold letters mean shouting.
So taking away the actual forum topic by mentioning such 'mistake' would inevitably lead to forum members to 'have a go' at each others throats on who is right. Or rather who has the bigger shinai.

As for the Korean language.
Here's a tip.

'Uhn-knee' = pronounced as 'on' and 'knee' (on my knee). Used often when the female addresses someone senior and that person is a woman. Used frequently in casual conversations.

'Nu-nah' = pronounced as 'noo(n)' and 'ah' (high noo(n), ah! thats how it done). Used to address a senior when addressee is male.

'What does "onii kaka-jusayo" mean? (by Commander)

Translation: Can you give me a discount, sister (or Nu-nah).
You dont have to say either 'uhn-knee' or 'nu-nah'.

Another useful Korean word(s):

"Gam-sa-ham-ni-da" - Thank you very much.
"Go-mah-woh" - casual Thanks.
"Jae-song-ham-ni-da" - Sorry,pardon me
"Mi-ahn-hae-yo" - casual Sorry

hope this helped.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your time in Korea. Where were you based?
Sgt.

DAnDAN...go look at his personal web page...he is new to kendo and is a child...Anyone who can respond to someone with such arrogance and insults deserves no respect back. Soldier is simply sharing his thoughts and opinions and really does not matter if Soldier is a girl or whatever. Do your research before you start defending others who offends people who do not know the whole picture.

Mystic pulled a faux-pas by using "wtf" in his question to a new forum member, although he prob. meant it ironically. Fine, can we just move on now? Everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves respect. What comes around goes around. Why stir up more trouble?

Mystic's not a child, and even if he was, children deserve compassion, not public whippings. "Research" includes knowing a bit about someone's posting habits and knowing when they're a confirmed troll or are just occassionally cantankerous. Mystic is a good guy, and i actually LIKE his website. So quit bashing him. Maybe he'll come in and speak for himself too. Enough of this strom in a teacup.

But hey, it's all good. This thread has even become funny! :D

Un ( as Under ) knee is like a humorous slang - when boys say "Between us girls" doesn't mean they're females :-) Noon-Ah is usually used for blood related or very close female. If you're addressing a stranger in a casual manner ( Like in a restaurant or Bogu Shop ) you'll use Un-Knee. BTW, use Un-Knee instead of Ah-Zoom-Ma ( implies older person - Original meaning is Aunt ), it gives you better chance if they come back and say "I'm not that young as you think " with blush :-)

There are certain ways of saying things in Korean just like in Japanese because of the "formal"/"informal" tones used. Rather than questioning Karaken's credibility, why don't you give your answer.
If you are a native Korean speaker, then this is moot. If you are a foreigner, you can always get a language book. If you don't plan on shopping in Korea for bogu, this is really moot.

Thanks for clarification HH but this isn't anything you can find in the book. As is the case with many language thing, there are many varieties and nuances especially in usage of slang. But without going very deep into scholarstic analysis, I was just trying to help non-native speakers with casual observation coming from daily life. Anyone who watches Korean soap ( TV shows ) will agree with my casual comment :-) It doesn't mean I'm 100% correct, but I don't think it's wrong enough to be criticized..
