K-wa,
I just watched the Kendo1.avi (the one that you seem to be conversing about).
Being a begginer i was wondering if someone could elaborate on this :
Hi Meng,
Just saw your video clip and wanted to point out one thing. When you get up from sonkyo, do not step back.
akihiro

Hi Danny Boy,
Ideally, one should stand up at the same spot where you performed sonkyo. Stepping backwards when coming up from sonkyo shows weak spirit since you are 'retreating' from the beginning. When you get up from sonkyo, make sure that your left foot does not move backwards while assuming chudan. If you feel that you must move when standing from sonkyo, move your right foot slightly forward first.

K-wa,
Thank you for a timely response.
How would i go about adjusting the maai ? Would steping forward with my right foot first then back slightly be allowed ?

I've been taught this two seperate ways, one way is to go down in sonkyo with your right foot slightly forward so that when you stand up, you are already at kamae. The other way (the one I prefer) is to stand up, and them move my right foot forward into kamae to close the initial distance between the kensens right away.
If I plan on attacking right from 'hajime' I go down in to sonkyo with my right foot pointed forward, and my left foot on maybe a 45 degree angle pointing outwards so I can take off faster.

hmmm..... well with me i am abit different. when I stand up from Sonkyo... i come up straight up.. not moving my feet forward or backward. My right foot is always pointed forward.. and by making myself stable.. i just twist my left foot to a 90 degree angle when sonkyo... and as you come up from sonkyo.. you just twist you left foot back back to kamae position.
As for during Shiais if i want to attack right from the start, i use the advantage of being in a sonkyo postion to push forward straight away as i come up..... also.... because my foot was in a 90 degree angle.. by twisting the foot at the same time as when you coming up it gives some extra strength to push off as greater distance so you can reach the other person.
well that is my way.. it seems to work for me.... :)
anyone else have their ideas???

Very small step straight forward or in a slight diagonal way forward to the right. The important thing, I believe, is to not step back or in a crab-wise direction.

If you're subscribed to the magazine, you'll get a free CD with the finals of the All Japan Women's Champs, the finals of the All Japan 8th Dan Champs, and everything from the quarter-finals through to the finals of the All Japan Champs.
Due to the file size, we won't be putting them on-line, however.

I made this list ages ago so some of the links may have passed away.
I didn't give any direct links to the vid files. Just look for the video file links on the linked pages. Shouldn't be too hard.
The links at the bottom of the list are probably the best quality.
Hope you find them interesting.
