Yup, just like I name my rifle Lurleen...
(all Full Metal Jacket fans please stand up).
hahaha...on a serious note: No, Bamboo shinai have too short a life span to be that attached to. But interesting question though, I think Prince Yamato called his blade Kusanagi(grasscutter).

Lots of nihonto have names, mostly pertaining to something they cut into tiny pieces fairly early on in their existance. Naming one's shinai, whilst being a personal preference, might put you into the category of being a wonderful argument for compulsory sterilisation.

Yeah, sure thing.
In fact someone even name them for me. One of my 'swords' is called 'Thirty-Nine Dobari', the other one is called 'Thirty-Seven Standard' and finally there's her companion, the 'Little Whacky Shoto'

It was a tradition in Japan (or so I am told) to give names to famous blades; however, the owner of the blade does not do this.
For example, I have a 2.84 shaku Iaito; a former Dojo mate initially referred to it as "the great drying pole" alluding to the extra-long katana used by Sasaki in his ill-fated duel with Musashi on Ganryu Island (Musashi carved the broken oar into a bokuto, and showed up late). The name stuck, although I refer to it as "the great drying pole II."
I have a 2.75 shaku Shinken on order (the blade is finished, and it is currently being outfitted with the associated sword furnature); it too will most likely get a name.
Shinai, on the other hand, are usually referred to as " that @#$%& stick!" javascript:smilie(':D')

I name my shinais:
The Shinai of champions (I won my first tournaments with this)
The Shinai of Legends (My other shinais had names, i needed to give this one a name)
The Unbreakable Shinai (it broke in a few months)
The Shinai of Winnas (formerly the shinai of champions, it was re-esembled)
and
The Big Mofo(a 650+ gram shinai)

Alright, Will, we need to sit you down and give you a class on sword naming. (Even referring to a shinai as a sword makes me cringe. it represents a sword, but it really isn't the same at all!) Some great traditional names include "grass cutter", "clothes rack", and the ever popular "my thing that cuts people".
Why don't you call the next one "Breakfast of Champions"? Seems like the next in the series. (Congratulations on the tournament win, incidentally.)
I'm afraid that if i had to name a weapon, I'd name it Suguru.

Well some names that I was thinking about were:
Kaitou (sharp Sword)
Hyojin (Glistening sword)
Kami-no-kaze (sword of the wind)
Aun (In Harmony)
Masamune (Famous sword)
Amaterasu (The Sun Kami)
Amaterasu-no-ken (Amaterasu's sword)
Kusangi (Grass-cutter)
Any other na,es you think would be good?
P.S.
Yes I sleep w/ my iaito, katana and good shinai ... BUT they don't get any covers.
