"he was hit in the throat and collapsed to the floor. He managed to get up but was felled again by a hit to the throat. He could not continue this time and was taken to hospital where fortunately nothing was diagnosed as broken."

This is a quote from the report from the European Championships in Hungary, found on the BKA website. It regards Kendo Team GB member Michio Wise.

What i am wondering is, does anybody know the outcome of the match?

Did he win or lose by default?

I know the IKF rules stipulate that, If a Shiai sha must withdraw from a match due to injury for personal reasons, the he forfeits the match, and his opponent is awarded 2 points. However, if it is determined that the injury was the fault of the opponent, intentional or accidental, then his oppenent shall forfeit the match. In addition the opponent shall not be allowed to compete in further shiai during the taikai

does anybody know if this is what happened??

i have never experienced this situation myself before, hence my question.

If you had read the whole article:-)

Since Michio had to retire it meant we lost the fight 2-0.

I did read the whole thing, about a week ago. Then i was reading the rules later, when i noticed that particular sub section. then i just went straight to the paragraph from the article, not thinking about reading further on.

It's unfortunate that he lost, but I think that we should be thankful that he will be able to participate in another shiai.

I'm happy to learn that he's ok now. Beeing in his opponent's team, I wasn't really happy with way this fight ended. Victory is nice, but not when you hurt people.

In fact it was not a hit in the throat (tsuki) but more a control. During this fight, I saw him beeing stopped three time by his opponent who was staying in chudan no kamae. At the last attack he realy impalled himself on his opponent's shinai and felt dow. The refferees called for a gogi, discussing if it was a forbidden control (moving down and up back to the throat) or not, but as the opponent did not move his shinai, they decided to continue the match.

AHHH, I see

So if it were due to him not controlling the centre, and skwering himself, that would be deemed HIS fault. Hence he lost the match.

Thank you very much for clearing that up for me.

Well I guess that would be the hard way to learn that its better to take centre before an attack.
