View Full Version : Does your shinai have a name?

SaitoHajime
17th July 2004, 11:55 AM
Before you ask. No I do not sleep with my shinai, nor do I hug it or tell it how much of a friend it is to me. Actually I haven't named it either simply because I haven't been practicing a lot but I soon think I'll be practicing kendo and iaido in which case I'll name my sword and then my shinai though I can't think of a good name right now. In any case, have any of you given a name to your shinai?

I like to call mine sparky. Yup that shinai is very loyal, everytime I say "here sparky, sparky" it comes a runnin.

Is this a joke? :D

Just one of those fun post, everything can't be serious all the time. That'd be no fun. On the other hand would you really mess with a guy walking with his shinai behind him on a leash? :)

since pleasedontbreakIcantaffordtoreplaceyou doesnt have a skull, skull crcka would get confused, go into a state of despair then end it self by harakiri.. only thing is.. it doesnt have a hara.. so it goes for SaitoHajime's stomach...

I call mine woody sometimes.

it's a running joke at my dojo because my Japanese friend was walking around one day with a shirt that said "It's a good day when you wake up with a woody." and he thought it ment going camping.

Other then that, when mine end up breaking I call them abunai shinai.. and make a little jingle out of it.. and put it into the box of unused shiais and then grab a different one for the time being....

But I think a good name could be Men wacker. or 4 rods.. or.. ok.. maybe there are just no good names for shinais..

mystic_kendoka
23rd July 2004, 08:12 PM
maybe not.. if it lasts 30 years or so as the ad's say, and u go through 2 or 3 shinai per year and they cost 20 bucks, in thirty years thats between 60 or 90 shinais.. which results in a cost of about 1200 to 1800 bucks..

so a $400 shinai would save u about a 1000 bucks on the long term, but its not a very good shinai, and personally i would rather use bamboo..

Wout
24th July 2004, 01:37 AM
science can only tell things about what it can know.
Their are no scientific statements about wether things have a soul or not.

Scientificly speaking things could have souls (or not) as much as scientificly speaking there could be an afterlife (or not)

mystic_kendoka
24th July 2004, 01:51 AM
the soul part i agree, when i said i was scientific i wasnt relating to EVERYTHING, but just the atheist part, that i don't believe in god, for scientific reasons,

however i think scientifically there is no after life, an after life would exist if there was a god, which scientifically doesnt exist, also when looking at evolution and the mechanics of humans its very difficult to think they have souls and these souls will go to the afterlife, determined by how good they were on earth..

Wout

mystic_kendoka

it went tht way because i mentioned tht i prefer bamboo over carbon, then zaph said only bamboo has souls, then i said i dnt believe in souls.. then he called me an atheist, i agreed etc.etc.

Silly people the point is that we don't know the answer and are only guessing.

its not really guessing.. if it was vague then it might be believable, tht there is someone up there similar to the descriptions.. but all these religions are SO precise... like the color of their hair, whether they have a bushy moustache or not... tht sort of accuracy is only achieved if they saw him in person (not likely) or they made the whole thing up, and as the centuries progressed, it became taken on as true (more likely)... ok lets stop talking about religion now... i feel tht i am starting to do a daqo'tah... :confused2

My shinai name is "SaitoHajime made a fool of himself".
First of all, it was very common practice in Fuedal Japan to name your sword. Sometimes the smith would name it, and other times the owner would, I do not believe he made a fool of himself.

I'd name my shinai, but then they break, and it would be wierd. I'd be like sorry about that crack bob, or cindy, it wasn't my fault that the men gane is that hard . yea. so. right. anyway, I actually have named my shinken. Nothing foolish about that. We might not be in feudal Japan, but the swords, and arts we love are.

You have a point there. I have yet to break one in a way that couldn't be repaired but if I did I guess I would be put in a really weird space. Funeral, last rights, last wish... etc :(

It could be "Iai-iai-toh" of course.
I don't practice iai, so I couldn't think of much material to fill the song out with. I guess you could say:

Old McDonald was a sword,
Iai iai toh (doh)
And Old McDonald cut some men,
Iai iai toh.
With a men men here,
And a men men there,
Here a men, there a men,
Everywhere a men men,
Old McDonald was a sword,
Iai iai toh.

Or you could incorporate renzoku waza...

Old McDonald was a sword,
Iai iai toh (doh)
And Old McDonald cut kote men,
Iai iai toh.
With a kote men here,

Here a kote, there a men,

Hi Nanbanjin-san,

Ooooo!! ROFL!! :D That was too funny!! And it only took me about 3 months to discover these little verses of yours! hahaha!! May I copy these and send them to my sensei please?
:D

Do you still want the chords? Tell me and I'll write them out for you guys. Heck, I can write the whole thing out on manuscript paper and then scan it and post it if anyone wants the notes of the song too. :D

"Splinter" works well as a name for mine.

Of course there's always "Bi*ch Slap".

Once it has finally broken you can take it out to the grill and call it "Towering inferno" as you throw it on the funeral pyre. I suppose "Smokey" would work too. (Makes for tasty burgers and 'brats!)

(I can't believe you guys couldn't come up with better lyrics, like..)

My shinai has a first name it's B-A-M-BOO,
My shinai has a second name it's S-H-I-N-AI
(verse)

...and that's how I spell K-E-N-D-O!
