The kodachi has its own kata but is not used in jigeiko except by those doing nito from what I can see.

In 'The Twilight Samurai' Seibei the main character is a kodachi fighter.

Could there ever be room just for kodachi in modern kendo jigeiko or shiai?

the kodachi is too fast, which is why you cannoy attack with it when doing nito, it would capsize the balance of everything, people would start abandoning daito's and everyone would start kodachi-kendo-ryu.. in other words, not good.. you could bring one to shiai, they might allow it, but you cant attack with it... not very useful..

You're perfectly free to use a kodachi, the size limits on shinai specify a maximum length but no minimum. It would have to meet the minimum weight requirement. People don't use it because giving up a foot of distance is silly. Originally shinai length was unregulated, and people kept using longer and longer ones to have an advantage. Now the regulations limit how long and light they can be so everyone is on an equal footing equipment wise.

Kodachi strikes are discounted in nito because... I don't know why, exactly. Maybe moocow can say. I suspect they're just trying to even the odds a little bit - using the daito as a shield and hitting from in close with the shoto is maybe too easy?

i think because
a. shoto attacks are faster and harder to block..
b. a shoto on its own is hard enough, how are you going to block a daito men and shoto doh combo?

a. work harder.. cut your opponent .. do not block
b. work harder.. cut your opponent .. do not block

If you die whilst killing your opponent.. you have won :)

I'm no moocow, but I remember being told by an IKF delegate at a seminar that kodachi strikes are discounted as a means of discouraging them. They are discouraged because they are dangerous. They are dangerous because of the amount of force the shorter shinai generates.

I heard that also...

I think I read it in Kendo World...
