where is Kendo TV?

With so many people interested in Kendo in the world.
and with some many people that live in places like Japan Korea and China...I know that there must be a lot of kendo on TV...

But I live in North Dakota...so how to go about looking for kendo TV ch.?

HHmmmm,

I've only ever seen kendo on TV once, and that was a documentary.
On cable it's rarely on the sports channels, like once or twice a year.

You probaly hav more chance seeing it on TV than me, cause you live in America.

You can always record a class or a shiai and play it on your VCR. It will be on TV then! LOL. But seriously, the only time I saw Kendo on television was when there was a documentary about the martial arts on TLC (and FitTV)

I already have the "DISH NET" tv sattelite....But Im not sure what channel to pay for...

NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), the equivalent of CNN, CBC (in Canada), and BBC I've read broadcast Kendo tournaments on a regular basis. I don't know if we can get it here in North America. I've been trying to find out how to subscribe to this network. If you find anything please let me know... I'm interested in watching some Kendo on TV as well.

I once saw a short piece about Iaido on television. Some guy was standing on a hill (I think!) and erm.. drawing his sword. That was it.

At the time I couldn't imagine anything more pointless. Needless to say my opinion has changed since then.

If you get the I-Channel, you might see a segment on the News segments they have on there sometimes. I don't know the likelyhood of that though.

I'm fairly sure this is incorrect. NHK does broadcast the All-Japan tournament on a regular basis... once a year. And that's it, nothin' else gets national coverage. They only broadcast from the quarter finals to the finals (the last day of competition). In addition it's not broadcast on NHK, but on a sub-channel of NHK (NHK-BS I think, if such a thing exists). So if you subscribe to NHK you might not get kendo anyway (you may get to see the documentary on Ishida's 8th dan or Eiga's kendo... but not tourneys).

If you want to see kendo on TV you have to buy videos... I believe Kendo World magazine offers (or at least they did) a free DVD or CD with every subscription that has the ENTIRE All-Japan matches on it (*cough* free plug *cough*).

Most tournaments are not covered by regular television networks (some private companies send out video crews to record matches and then sell tapes of events like the World Championships, the All-Japan Police tournament, the 8th dan tournament, etc.).

Kendo is not really made for television (especially not live TV). The matches have no set time limit and the viewership would be low to say the least, even in Japan.

(CNN is the equivalent of the CBC, NHK and BBC? You mean PBS, not CNN)

TV Japan only shows kendo once a year.... All Japan Championship in november. It is same broadcast by NHK, shows some quarterfinals and semi and final matches. (if lucky, you might able to catch documentarty about kendo such as 'ichigeki ni kakeru' documentary about Eiga sensei -also produced by NHK)


Last year, due to schedule conflict with japanese election, they cancelled to air the championship. *sigh*

The closest thing I've seen about kendo on tv was a show on aikido.(Both are martial arts ^_^;;) I'd love for instead of baseball(not that theres anything wrong with baseball) being on for a couple hours to have a kendo tournement on...that would be sweet! I'd see if the international channel has something...although thats a mere guess of mine. :smiley:

There is not a lot of kendo on TV. There's videos, DVDs, and video clips. This website has kendo video clips.

I am also. Note that Kendo originated from the Japanese Samurai training and Zen Buddhism has a very strong influence on it. As for me I will just concentrate on the sports and physical training aspect of it. Nothing more. I will treat it just like your regular fencing and will not partake any of its Zen Buddhism influences. After all Jesus and not Buddha is my Lord!
