Well, I just finally, after three times of practicing, folded what I would think of as a perfect hakama fold. I can get to the moving the inside leg to the right, and getting nice creases in the back...But then I flip over...the horror, the fanning pleats, the disorganization. WHYYY!!! Anyone know any tips on how to quicky (or at least relatively quick) fold a hakama?

If you have a mini spray bottle and just mist the hakama when you align the pleats and you reinforce the pleats with your fingers, they stay very nice. keep in mind that you dont have to do this very often.

also iron it semi regularly.

Make sure that the hakama is covered (with piece of cloth etc) before ironing it.

you are on the right track.

note* ironing makes the cloth shine.

Usually the length of hakama is bit longer than the length of arm and it makes hard to hold the two pleates in the back as you flip it and lay down. I usually fold the top of the hakama once or twice (about the width of the himo) so I can hold the top and bottom of hakama tightly with my two hands without loosing the pleates as I lay it down.

Swiss-san,

That was the best link I have ever seen for folding the hakama! This one should be made into a sticky! :) Seriously! What should happen Swiss-san, is that you take this link, put it into a new thread with a good title for the thread, and then Hamish-san could make your link a sticky for everyone. You really did some good searching! :)

I have a link at home on how to tie the hakama, but if anyone can get a good one, maybe they can post it and add it to the sticky.

that's why I think tying should also be on that sticky. Just to show off to the friends and family once.

good pics, but I really can't tell which is which when it goes to tying the hakama. Especially since I don't use that huge (obi?) belt.

Just focus on the hakama part only.

The long himos is the front. the short himo is the back.

A small suggestion... Could we take all of these how-to's (ie. folding kamai, maintaining your bogu and shinai, etc ) and stick them in a new thread of How-tos. It could easily become the best resource for information on Kendo on the web.

sure make my noobish life easier.

Since I can't post in the sticky:

I've sort of gotten the hang of maintaining the pleats in the hakama. However, one part i'm having trouble with is the middle "crotch" (for lack of a better term) area, where the hakama splits into two legs. It always bulges, due to the material there, and I can't get it to sit flat... Am I just doing it incorrectly?

It seems like there's more material there than in a Western style pair of pants, so the easiest solution would be to flatten it to the left or right? Does it matter what happens with the rest of the hakama, as long as the pleats are maintained?
