Seven Samurai is great.
I saw a new Movie last night at the cinema. Its called Zatoichi.
About a blind Samurai acting out as a massuer.
I loved it. Funny, heaps of action and if you think Kill Bill had some gory parts in it, this one destroys it..
If its at a theatre or on DVD in your country, I highly recommend it.
Its a Takeshi Kitano film...

Just saw that film last night and it was very good. The depiction of the kodachi waza was most excellent. The historical context and content was also very good. Highly recommend it. BTW this is a new film

Twighlight Samurai is yet another excellent Sanada Hiroyuki film (this time using a shortsword, in Onmyoji he used a chinese broadsword and in Last Samurai a katana), came out in 2002 or early 2003, is available on fairly cheap DVD from Hong Kong with acceptable English subtitles.

Warning - A superb period piece rather than an action film - pure action heads should be warned there are only 2 fight scenes in it :).

So many good samurai movies though - Ran, Kagemusha, Yojimbo, Throne of Blood, Sanjuro, the Lone Wolf and Cub series, the Blind Swordsman series. And so many appalling ones....

But for me 7 Samurai is still the best.

If you have not seen Samurai Banners or the Last Swordsman not to mention the whole Nemuri Kyoshiro series starring Ichikawa Raiso then it is still an open question. The Full Moon Cut series is one to see if you are a fan of these chambarra films.

If you saw the magnificent seven (western) movie from the 70's it was based off of this.

I'm pretty sure I've seen these. There was a Musashi series on NHK a few years ago, and if we're talking about the same one, it's excellent. Although, trying to watch it in a marathon can be kind of annoying, but mostly because the same music is used for the same kinds of events. The lead, whose name escapes me at the moment is awesome... bi-polar even.
Oh, and big ups to Mifune as well. His character in Rashomon is the best!

My all time favourites are;

Mibugishiden [When the last sword is drawn?]
Ame agaru
.
.
.
Everything else. All of Kurosawa with Toshiro Mifune, Semi shigure, Samurai fiction, Zatoichi, etc.

Mibugishiden is cool because it has a lot of action, but it's also quite moving and explores Bushido and what a "good" Samurai should or shouldn't be. Ame agaru is cool because it's Mugai-ryu and also explores the philosophy of what a good Samurai should or shouldn't be.

I have to say my all time favorite has to be "Samurai triology"

Of the newer movies, I'd have to say "Twilight Samurai" or "Hidden Blade."

Samurai fiction was great fun too, don't get me wrong....

Long time reader, first time poster ;).
Favorite samurai movies are as follows:

7 Samurai of course (an absolute must see)

Samurai trilogy ( Toshiro Mifune is the best. Also, if you have never read the novel "MUSASHI", written by Eiji Yoshikawa, I highly recommend you do. It is the story the Samurai Trilogy was based upon and my favorite book to date and sooooooooooo much better than the movie).

The Hidden Blade

The Doom Sword ( circa 1966, like 7 Samurai, this movie is leaps and bounds ahead of any movie of its time or today for that matter, wonderful acting, filmography and a great story).

Twilight Samurai (Excellent movie for those who need substance for meditation. It is not a hack and slash gore fest at all. While fight sequences are a bare minimum, the movie is captivating from beginning to end).

Musa:The Warrior (while this is not a samurai movie, i had to mention it. It is without a doubt one of my favorite movies yet. It is difficult for me to see anyone not enjoying this movie. Trust me, rent it, watch it, and you will buy it ;) ).

Very hard to pick a favorite as I really like several, and there are a lot I have not seen.
Ran, Twilight Samurai, Seven Samurai, and Sword of Doom are my top picks.

Rashomen, Taboo, Throne of Blood, were also very enjoyable.

I am also able to enjoy Last Samurai as an action movie, knowing that it has as much reality as 'Vertical Limit' has to climbing, or 'Greys anatomy' to medicine. I liked it better than Shogun with the wimpy effete Richard Chamberlain.

Kill Bill ?? well I have seen them, sort of bizarre, like a Grimm fairytale written while on a bad mushroom trip. I love the way Hollywood has instant death from snake bite or throwing knives.

I've been watching Seven Samurai since I was a kid and I always get something new from it, everytime I watch it.
The Lone Wolf and Cub series is fun. The main character kills whole villages each episode. They guy who plays Ito has pretty clean form...
The new Zatoichi movie was kind of cool too.

The new Zatoichi had its moments... Not really a good movie overall

My favourites:

Samurai Trilogy

Seven Samurai is great.
Of the Musashi series or Samurai trilogy I really only liked the last one. It's hard to put that book on screen.
Any of the film adaptations of Fujisawa Shuuhei's novels. Although they revolve around a samurai character they are not filled with action so I don't know if they would appeal to people here. They are great period pieces.

The Kurosawa greats are probobly the "best" Samurai movies ever in terms of the sheer genius that went into the making of them but they're not my favorite. My personal favorite is "Lone Wolf And Cub: Babycart To Hades". The LWandC movies are totally OTT and silly but they're just damned good fun to watch.

Here are some samurai movies.

藤沢周平 (Shuhei Fujisawa) a Japanese author
His work has been adapted for both television and film.

Historical fiction

If you've never seen these movies, I highly recommend. You would see kakyu bushi's life and kenpo as well.

The Twilight Samurai (たそがれ清兵衛 Tasogare Seibei) (2002)
The Hidden Blade (隠し剣 鬼の爪 Kakushi Ken: Oni no Tsume) (2004)
Love and Honor (武士の一分 Bushi no Ichibun) (2006)

A while back BBC3 had a Japan week, showing various films and documentaries which were generally pretty good.

They also showed a film called Gohatto, which promised drama and violence among the Shinsengumi - "Fantastic!", I thought. It started well, with intense Kendo and dramatic musings.

Then the director set about randomly ambushing me with man love. Seriously. One scene - fencing. Next scene - two fellas humping like it's going out of fashion. No warning given.

Sodding BBC didn't say it was based on a yaoi, the funny bastards.

......Any period piece by Kurosawa is good, as are most of his films. The Twilight Samurai is an excellent deconstruction of the samurai film and very well made.

Gohatto, which promised drama and violence among the Shinsengumi - "Fantastic!", I thought. It started well, with intense Kendo and dramatic musings.
Gohatto(御法度) is a meaning of taboo in Japanese. It has a great unique approach, completely different from others. There are so many TV and films related to Shinsengumi(新撰組). None of them is showing the issue of homosexuality like this movie.

The Twilight Samurai is an excellent deconstruction of the samurai film and very well made.
Personally, I like "The Hidden Blade" more, if you had a chance to see "The Hidden Blade", how would you feel, please tell me. I save any tips for you right now.

Not really a 'Samurai' movie, but the recent version of Goemon was pretty good, I really enjoyed it actually. Also new ones like 'Kamui' (again more Ninja than Samurai) and 'Tajomaru' aren't bad. Also saw 'Ballad' recently too, that was kinda cute...

One of my all-time favourites is 'Dororo' though, but I don't know if that counts as 'Samurai' either... but again it is full of sword-fights.

Someone mentioned the TV Series 'Shogun', I thought that was brillaint! I think it is really entertaining and a very well-told story, told in a somewhat 'British' way. I like embarassing my wife in public by loudly quoting Anjin-san's extremely cagey Japanese - "Yabanjin iie!! Watakushi wa samurai! Yabanjin iie!!" - you can probably imagine why she might get embarrased by this...

SanguineKendoka

Shogun taught me all the Japanese I know, with the exception of "Kirin Ichiban, hayaku". The book was good but occasionally trashy.

Personally, I like "The Hidden Blade" more, if you had a chance to see "The Hidden Blade", how would you feel, please tell me. I save any tips for you right now.

I looked at the trailer and it looks pretty good and this thread has good things to say. Same director as Twilight Samurai definitely sold it to me, though, so I'll set about getting hold of it and post the results on here.

I enjoy tastefully done samurai films, historically accurate rather than a dual-wielding random in a topknot murdering henchman by the thousands (true for any film, I suppose).

I'm getting paid a little to review books and films nowadays, so I'll throw a quick paragraph together for any other fence-sitters.

The Seven Samurai will always rate as my favorite because it was the first samurai movie I saw.

But I can't believe no one has mentioned Harakiri (aka Seppuku) on here!! This movie is one the best stories, and one of the best portrayals of the Samurai culture.

Berserker
22nd June 2010, 07:07 PM
I guess Seven Samurai will top my list (as it has done with almost everybody else), but I definately rate:

Lone wolf and cub (Series)
Samurai assasin (Even though a Japanese movie dubbed with English sounds sooooo wrong)
When the last sword is drawn
Shogun
Samurai Trilogy, except for the first movie.
Twilight Samurai

The older Zatoichi movies were much better than the modern remake, but I think the CGI blood ruined it for me!

Thats just my 2 cents

Samurai Fiction was good, but I thought Akakage was more entertaining.

My personal favourite is Sword of Doom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_doom). while the swordplay is excellent, the main draw for me is watching the main character's descent into madness. The cinematography is excellent as well and it's too bad they never completed the sequels.

We almost need sub-categories.
Eg.
-life as samurai
-sword porn
-bushido
-action

Zatoichi has a fun story line and some action, Last Sword, and Seven Samurai are deeper, have some bushido. Twilight Samurai is a great perspective on life as low ranking samurai. I like all those movies but for totally different reasons.

I can tell you what it is not: six string samurai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-String_Samurai)

Six-String Samurai is set in an alternate history America, in which Russia launched several nuclear warheads at the U.S. in 1957, reducing most of the United States to an inhospitable desert. The government has entirely collapsed save for the Kingdom of Elvis, who rules from "Lost Vegas" to California. The Red Army is besieging Vegas, but the lack of supplies and equipment ("We haven't had bullets since 1957," comments a Russian general in the movie) from the Soviet Union has caused them to degenerate into just another gang squabbling for territory. As the movie begins, Elvis has died and a radio disc jockey (voiced by Keith Mortimer and sounding suspiciously like Wolfman Jack) announces a call for all musical virtuosos to come to Lost Vegas to try to become the new King of Rock'n'Roll.

Buddy (Jeffrey Falcon) (implied to be Buddy Holly with a katana sheathed in the back of his guitar) is one of the musicians converging on Lost Vegas on the death of The King.

I missed this in the theaters and am looking forward to it on DVD:

The Sakurada-mon Incident (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynYExs6rKuc&NR=1).

It looks like they paid a nice amount of attention to historical detail. The incident was the assassination of Tairo Ii Naosuke by ronin of the Mito domain. Among the Mito ronin was one samurai from Satsuma domain, Arimura Jizaemon. Arimura was the one who actually took Ii's head. He was a practitioner of Yakumaru Jigen-ryu, and though you can't see it well in this trailer, I've seen other clips that show him administering the coup de grace from Yakumaru Jigen-ryu's "Tombo no Kamae" (Dragonfly kamae), and with a decent Yakumaru Jigen-ryu "enkyo" (monkey scream). Well, it seems decent for me, a classical budo enthusiast; Jigen-ryu folks might have higher standards.

Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai, leads a life without glory as a bureaucrat in the mid-XIX century Japan. A widower, he has charge of two daughters (whom he adores) and a senile mother; he must therefore work in the fields and accept piecework to make ends meet. New prospects seem to open up when Tomoe, his long-time love, divorces a brutal husband. However, even as the Japanese feudal system is unraveling, Seibei remains bound by the code of honour of the samurai and by his own sense of social precedences.

I would not say it is the -best- ever but I think Ichi (http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi514169369/) is pretty grand. Neat take on the blind swordsman deal. A blind swordsman (swordswoman?) who can draw her blade but seems to only attack with a draw, and a brilliant swordsman who cannot draw his blade at all. It was good. Some minor issues though. I still wonder how she could hear what number dice in a cup land on but cannot hear where an enemy is coming from when the enemy does not yell.

And it is not a Samurai movie, being Chinese and all. But "The Emperor and the Assassin" is an amazing epic.

This film (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/13assassins/) looks like it might score high on the slash-o-meter next month.

I replied to this thread roughly 4 years ago, but since then I have to add:

Sword of Doom - Ryunosuke is the best villain I've ever seen in any film.

Ken (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJPRg2zzWHc) - The 1964 film about a university kendo club. Based on the story by Yukio Mishima

Bamboo Blade - Gotta love an anime centered around Kendo!

And Twilight Samurai, too!

It was not bad, reminded me of Samurai 7.

This flick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULn-l5gl5II) is an Asian take on the "Dancing With Wolves" or "Last Samurai" set-up except with some Muy Thai mixed in with sword action.
