This is in partial reply to Confound's post about the Canadian Kendo Federation and it's replies, that discussion got me to wondering, how many of you guys have any type of for profit kendo organizations in the area you live?
I know over here in Ontario there are at least a dozen different kendo clubs that I am aware of, and of that number there is only one dojo that is specifically 'for profit', which is a kumdo dojo sort of run on the side of a fairly sucessful tae kwon do dojo.
This dojo charges $100 per month, with (I think?) no annual federation fee as I don't believe they're affiliated with the CKF-- at any rate, that's not too bad considering since they're specifically making money from you, I think they have a sensei available almost everyday of the week that you can drop in and practice with-
All the other dojos are either university affiliated, or are run by instructors that teach kendo in their spare time. Anyway, I was just thinking isn't it nice that kendo hasn't become horrible over-commercialized like many other martial arts? :D
At my dojo the fee formula goes: (Canadian funds)
CKF fee (can never remember how much, but it's not too much)
Dojo Fee ($50/ year that goes to set-up fees for tournaments/events etc.)
$40/ month (for usage of the space)
