Beginners don't need equipment except for the shinai.
First, you wear normal athletic clothing to practices.
Then, you get to wear a uniform.
Then, you get to wear armor.
Every dojo, or school, is different.
Don't ask KhawMengLee about armor, he's got rich-boy show-off bogu.

Hi 29 year-old female here. Interested in taking up Kendo. Have emailed Yap-san (almost a week ago) but still no reply.
Would like to find out more details about the kendo classes ( fees, cost of equipments etc. ).
If i do join the class in Damansara, will I be the only female there.... ( sigh)....

You can come if you like to the Sunday sessions as it's also a mix, but usually the national squad gets pulled aside for extra stuff like drills and shiai practice.

all in you are looking to spend about RM2000. This includes shinai, keikogi and hakama and a very basic bogu set.

22nd December 2006, 11:06 AM
Eeek... but I don't need a bogu till after about 6 months right? So the shinai keikogi and hakama themselves cost? 600? 400? 1000?

I don't think you'll need to worry about bogu just yet. Come to the first few classes wearing something comfortable like jogging pants and t-shirt. The club will provide you with shinais for the first few lessons.

Try to decide if kendo's what you want to do then. You may decide that kendo's not for you after the first few lessons. So, buy your kendogi, hakama, and shinai after you've decided that you'll continue with kendo. No point wasting your money on the shinai and uniform now only to find that kendo's not really for you.

I think there's a fresh intake in January but I'm not sure. Come to class tomorrow at 4:00 and you'll get to see what the juniors do. That should give you a feel.

Meng, you fatso! Where the hell you been?

DrannK13

Okay, and sorry about the spam, my comp was lagging all of a sudden(Like an earthquake, very sudden) And whats the address for the place? Jogging pants arent comfortable(or at least thats what I think of them, never wore them before) coz I am kinda fat:redface: . I'm a still a secondary school student , so I am just asking for infos before asking my dad and mom about joining kendo(I have been in taekwando for about 2-3 years and I am adding kendo to my activities for much needed exercise(i'm a lazy computer freak) if kendo's what I want.)

the registration fee is RM30, and monthly fee is RM10, student will be only RM5.
we will be training in Japan Club Kuala Lumpur, Taman Seputeh(Nearby Mid Valley).
I am not so sure about the schedule for the new intake, should be 7pm~9pm Wed and 4pm~6pm Sat.
the keikogi and hakama will cost you around RM300~500 and the shinai is around RM80~100.
I think that's all~ new intake will be January 3rd. Please call Mr.Yap to confirm everything.

Hey guys :emb: I am a newbie too. Just started my first lesson yesterday. My dojo is at the Pusat Aquatik Darul Ehsan in Shah Alam. There weren't many beginners, just around 9 of us and 7 of them are all kids aged... 14 below? ^^|| Since I am 17, that makes me the second oldest among them. The other girl is 21. Hello everyone! It's nice to meet fellow kendoists here. I'm yet to join the training at Tmn Seputeh, since I lived in Shah Alam. To those of you guys and gals who have had formal kendo training, may I ask if the dojo teaches kendoist who is left-handed to train with the shinai using their left hand as dominant hand? I'm left-handed and would very much like to learn kendo. I read some books on kendo and found that none of the photographs of kendoists show left-handed :(

We use both our hands to grip the shinai =P And the force is actually from the left hand, right hand is only to control the movement of shinai...

Ohai yo ! It's morning Zzzz time to wake up and do some exercise ^^
Hi guys ! I'm Khen from Shah Alam! How do you do ? I'm new here and I'm really thrilled since I have finally broke the silence ^^; I finally got the guts to register here and put up some post ....
I am a humble 20 years old otaku ... kidding I'm male and I'm currently a first year Mass communication student in Inti College SJ. A big fan of all forms of Martial arts. I'm currently in Wu Shu and I joined WMACKL in Ampang for Kum Do Practice ^^ it was fun but expencive ... Rm 179 per month was a bomb to a poor student like me ...
It's really good to see there there are so many people who are also a Kendoist like me ^^ haha but I haven't really started ... I have a Bokuto and a real katana at home ^^ but never used either .. hahaha My grand father was the Founder of Ju Jit Tsu in Malaysia .. Professor Kam Hock Hoe. First Chinese to attain 7th Dan. But I am not fortunate enough to meet him in person as he passed away when I was barely 5 years old. But his Dojo is being runned by his Soke *inheritor . T.T it's not me sob ...

Anyway I am looking forward to join the group and hopefully make it to National championship ^^ thats my goal ! But my short term goal now is to get fit again .. I've been slacking off during my Form 6 years .... STPM was worst than getting beaten by gangsters .... hahah I'm over weight now ... Stress makes me eat alot T,T So i have to wake up early to exercise everyday ~ burn the fats !

I just want to say .. It's really nice to meet you all . even by reading the post here ... I feel very comfortable ^^.

If my incompetance caused any trouble to anyone .. I am really sorry . But I wish to break the ice alittle ... so at least you will know who i am briefly ^^.

Umm .. I've email Yap dono about the requirements to join the class for training sessions. But .... I hope I wouldn't have to bother anyone T,T; I just want to join soon.

Thank you for reading my post. And thank you again for forgiving my incompetance.

-Khen

Thanks Hammu, I'll give him a call tomorrow. By the way do you train in Damansara Height too ? or do you train in Tmn Seputeh ? Maybe I should go to Damansara Height first and see Mr. Yap or the Sensei over there... I'm really confused on how things are run ... cuz usually the Sensei / master are the ones who recruit and accept new students. Anyway if Yap dono is the man than I should show some respect and give him a call.

Mate,

You can order the gi and hakama yourself from kendoshop.com. Try to ask S.K. Lim, Mr Yap or Chua-sensei to give you an indication of the measurements. You could order it through either of them or do it through the website yourself.

I suggest that you stick to the cheaper stuff as you may find that kendo is not something that you'll pursue on a very long-term basis. Be prepared to fork out RM200-300 for the gi and hakama. Males wear blue. Females have the option of blue or white, although I'd strongly suggest blue as you might eventually be wearing armor and the blue dye'll rub off onto the gi and hakama.

Happy training!

hai ! I'm back.

I Recieved a reply from Yap dono.

I have to go for the next intake since I am 1 week late for the intake registration ... sad

I'll start training on my own until 4th July's Intake.
Hopefully I won't be a burden by then.

Ahh ... I was in Kumdo but I stop when I realise that I can't afford anymore ... WMACKL charges a bomb ! there goes my dream to represent Malaysia in Kumdo .... ahhhh

I'm a Mudansha sob ....

I wonder if I could attend to see the training quietly ....
I mean since mitori geiko >practise watching is a part of Kendo practise...

Well I'm just sad I couldn't join earlier. Information is scarce and my college assignments were killing me ... Not complaining .. just sharing.

Btw kendoshop.com < They only have Internation and Singapore . You sure buying by myself is ok ? wouldn't it be better if I buy it from Yap dono or sensei ? Anyway thanks for the information about the color. At least now I know which to get.

Well, anyone can tell me exactly where in Tmn Seputeh is the Dojo / training center located ? Please ... I only know how to get till the KTM station and to Mid Valley from Tmn Seputeh Station.

Please advise.

The dojo is situated in The Japan Club at Taman Seputeh. If you're taking the KTM, then it's away from the station and towards the housing area. You can go and have a look at the Saturday class (4:00-6:00) and probably for the Wednesday class (7:00pm-9:00pm). I don't think anyone'll mind if you observe dojo etiquette (although you may want to check with Mr Yap on this).

One more thing, respect is good, but I think that Mr Yap wouldn't mind if you address him as Mr Yap and not Yap-tono (or dono).

Hi,
Thanks for your information. Looks like I'll have to take a cabby to the Japan Club in Taman Seputih when I reach the KTM station. After that I can walk there once i know the route around. Walking is good exercise ^^

I think Mitori geiko is very important because without obsevation I will never know how to be a true Kendoka. As a Mudansha I feel very serious about achieving higher spiritual and understanding in Kendo.
My idol is Miyamoto Musashi. haha I know it's alittle weird but I think his Way of Ken is very unique. we usually think that Samurai will rush into battle and slice everyone he can see.. But Miyamoto says "If you draw your long sword quickly, you can never slice your oponent" Therefore, when Drawing sword it should be calm and observe your oponent's moment and Strike when he shows an opening. Modern day version of 1 hit 1 kill ^^;
Of course I'm not going to kill anyone ... Am I ? ^^;
So, I'll Ask Mr. Yap first if I can attend a Mitori Geiko / Observation session. You won't even know I exist ... *who am i kidding .. I'm big sized hahaa*
Ok, I'll be sending an email to Mr. Yap .

Ps, When a rounin meets a Samurai, he shall refer the master samurai with -dono. ^^;

-Sincerely
Khen

I think MYR200-300 should be safe. You shouldn't invest in anything else that's more expensive until you're absolutely positively sure that this is something that you'll be doing long term. Unless of course, you have money to burn - in which case, that's a totally different story.

hans.alison
2nd May 2007, 01:29 AM
Yeh .. Elessar I tot I told you adi that it's going to cost abt Rm 200 to 300 ?
yer .... u no listen =_+
lol kidding >_<
anyway the armor is about 300-500 USD here is almost RM2k lah ... if u lucky you can wait till some sales going on ... u can get it up to RM 1.5k +/- depends lah maybe the postal cost will kill you ? dunno ....
Money to burn ? i have some ..... it's called "hell" notes. Mwahahahaha ... Imagine if your granny was in Heaven and u burn "Hell" notes for her.... Dude ! she has to go all the way to hell just to deposit her money or spend her money in hell ... Why hell notes when they can use Heaven notes ? Besides what's the currency conversion ? do they have a Malaysia Hell, India Hell ? and Malaysia Heaven , India Heaven ? .. when you think about it ... it's more like a joke than tradition.
However, tradition is still tradition ... so I can only respect it lah ^,^;
cheers ..... Somebody better remember to burn me a Kendo armor when I die and write there "To hell or heaven"

Yoong87,

Please contact Mr Yap from the Malaysian Kendo Association. Alternatively, please come for the beginners' classes on Wednesday and Saturday. Wednesday's classes begin at 7 and end at 9. Saturday's classes begin at 4 and end at 6.

The classes are held at The Japan Club in Taman Seputeh. Come for class on Saturday at 4 (by that I mean come earlier, say 3:30 and speak to Mr Yap) and get a feel for it. Shinais will be provided for you for the first few lessons after which if you do decide to continue, only then should you buy the your own shinai, gi, and hakama.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need further info.

I just returned from an excursion to a centre that teaches kendo/kumdo in KL. The place is situated in City Square, Ampang Park opposite Menara Citibank. The name of the centre is World Martial Arts Centre (or WMAC for short). They have several disciplines there and the website is http://www.wmackl.com.

Just so you know, kendo is only taught once a week on Saturdays for 1 hour and if you're only taking 1 class, that'll set you back by MYR125 per month.

The sensei for the class is a Mr Kim (he's Korean) and his daughter (I think she's his daughter, but she's pretty hot). Obviously time is a factor and you don't get past anything other than suburi. So if you guys and girls are game. Go have a look.

Me? I have better things to do.

P.S. I forgot to add that while his daughter's pretty hot, upon closer inspection, she also looks slightly underage. Whether this is due to her being Northern Asian or small size, I don't know. Plus, she's got a father who's an experienced kendoka. If you guys want to tempt fate, be my guest.... :D

Hi all, my name's Ken (irony at its best).

I am an aikidoka and through aikido, I learn about kenjutsu. Every week there are bokken practice in my dojo. From these lessons I learned from my sensei, my interest in kenjutsu grows. I have always been fascinated by the japanese katana swordplay.

Nonetheless, I have tried called the number provided at the first page of this thread to look for Mr Yap, unfortunately, when I called, it went into the voice-mail :(

Somehow, there are no information about the exact adress of the location of these Kendo Dojo after 10 pages long...So please, if you could, post the exact address of these dojo?

I live in Seri Petaling, yes under the Seputeh constitution :P therefore I will most probably be going to the Japan Club to train, if I may :)

Aikido still takes up a lot of my time and I wish to learn Kendo to further enhance my kenjutsu skill.

At the end of the day, if it is possible, I hope to learn nitojutsu :D

ps: I learn these as an art, more than for self-defence purpose...strange huh?

Ouch! Why is it a brain raper? Are there so much difference?

JoDuncan
2nd August 2007, 11:17 PM
a brain raper is a mental task or activity that somehow violates your noodle.

Sword work in general actually. Be prepared to spend most of your time looking confused!

The principal difference is that in aikiken the sword is used as a vessel to transport ideas or principals. This doesn't mean that you can't apply them in kendo but you will have to learn all the kendo kihon and keep the aiki completely seperate for the first few years. I'm still in the first few years so i'll let you know how i get on in a few years :p :D

Best of luck!! You might love it.

I had a chat with Mr Yap earlier today. After some discussion, I am advised not to learn Kendo at this time, due to the fact that I am still learning aikido (just 1 year plus) and between this 2 arts, there are conflicting ideas.

Well, I can learn if I want to but then it would probably confuse me :P

Anyway, I would probably come down to the club to see how Kendo training is :)

yama2
10th August 2007, 04:30 PM
Magixk,

Like you I started with aikido and thereafter took up kendo. I thought I could keep both sets of discipline separate while reaping benefits from both.

I can emphatically tell you that it doesn't work (at least not for me) for the simple fact that the philiosophies for both disciplines are totally different. Aikido uses the principles of a circle in it's movement and that all motion can be deflected or re-directed. Kendo teaches you to maximise your power for a single strike (although sometimes multiple strikes are engaged) through the harmonisation of body, sword and spirit (Sempais, please correct me if I'm wrong).

The respective kamaes are different and if you want to progress in either aikido or kendo, I'd suggest picking one art and then sticking to it. When you're proficient in one art, only then should you consider taking up another art - I guess that's why most of us stick with kendo most our lives! ;)

My first post on this thread.

I am from around Kepong. Jinjang Selatan to be exact. It's better to learn it in Japan Club. Anywhere else will attract a lot of attention that might be distracting (and at times unwanted attention). It's best to have a clean floor (with smooth surface), your feet have to slide on the floor pretty often. Take a KTM to Mid Valley or car pool with another person.

FYI, Don't drop in at Japan Club to say hi this weekend. There won't be classes this Saturday (1st Sept) and Sunday (2nd Sept) since most of us (senseis, Mr. Yap and most members) will be in JB for a Kendo Summer Camp.

Ok, just in case your dad allows you to take public transportation. I don't think you should take the KTM. The KTM schedule is nuts. I once waited 2 hours for a nonexistent train. Up to now I still have no idea where the train went. hahaha.

It will be better if you walked out to sunway pyramid and cross to the other side of the highway using the bridge. Then take a Metrobus no.10 or 13 bus to midvalley. It will cost you RM1.00. The KTM will cost RM1.60 if i'm not mistaken.
I'm not sure about RapidKL though.

Don't worry. I used to travel using metrobus. The only problem i had was the crowded bus. And I dropped my wallet in the bus once... but that was my fault...

My name's Yana and I've been wanting to start learning Kendo for some time now.. I'm aware that there are classes at JCKL but here's my problem..

I'm an engineer working offshore.. typically for 5 weeks at a time. When I'm onshore I spend 2-3 weeks at my office in Perth.. and then I get a break for 2 weeks @ home (home is KL) before I go back offshore again.

I would like to know if I can still learn Kendo even though I'm in KL for only 2 weeks for every 10 week rotation that I have. Would the dojo at JCKL even accept me as a student with the kind of schedule I have?

Anybody can offer me any advice?

Thanks!

Hihi,

General practice sessions for beginners are on Wednesday 7-9pm, Saturdays 4-6pm, and Sundays 5-7pm. I don't think you need to worry about bogu at this stage for at least 6 months.

I've been doing kendo for nearly 10 months. But its been pretty much on and off due to needing to juggle my studies and other stuff.

But yes, now that I'm finally on holidays Ill like to put proper work on my kendo.

Heck, even my footwork feels uneven and rusty.

Hope to see you guys soon.

Hi there,

I arrived in Malaysia a few months ago and I'm here for 3 years. I would love to start training seriously again but to do that I will have to wait until I get rid of my two plantar fasciitis (yes, both feet!) which have been making my life miserable for the past 3 years.

Anyway, I think I can still practice katas. For those training at Japan Club in KL, do you practice katas regularly and, if so, when? I would love to find a good dojo again even if only to meet with other kendokas and practice some katas.

Cheers!

Umm guys, help me check this out

Before I left Malaysia, I caught sight of a sign above a shoplot somewhere near the Kelana Jaya LRT station with the words.

"KENDO"

now.. Im not sure if its a store with a name thats awkwardly similiar to what we practice. Or its some dodgy shabby little mcdojo, or whatever.

Does anyone here know about this mysterious thing?
I really wished I had time to check it out.

See you at training mand fyi, there's no iaido dojo in Malaysia and please do not even think about trying to bring your iaito in. It will be confiscated at Customs.

Hello everyone,

I plan to move back to Kuala Lumpur (TTDI area) sometime this October.

I am taking about a year off (well actually, make that a full year) after finishing tertiary studies, so I figured I do something fun and excitable in the ample free time I will have during this time.

Having an impressive record of zero exposure to any kind of martial arts, I am hoping someone can point me to a "training facility" or "instruction academy" which accepts beginners at any time and have flexible facilities for use when I wish to practice out-of-class.

I am readily available to purchase any needed equipment and membership fees*, so that will not be an issue. This is also an opportunity for me to ask the question: What can I achieve in 1 year's worth of doing this sport?

From what I've read, there's no belt system, so how does one keep track of progress?

If you have advice or information, I would greatly appreciate it if you emailed me on darkshaunz@hotmail.com (or add me on MSN, if that is the convenient option).

Kind thanks and Regards.

*Unless said equipment will bankrupt me (or force me to sell my cat).

tataxi

never expected there was dojo in malaysia
i was interested in kendo long time ago but there was no kendo society in all kinds of school
few question here...
is there other weapon trained besides shinai(like bokken or naginata)
and do seniors do tameshigiri with real katana O.O?
anyway i'm a chinese, heard of your dojo is in "japan club"... you except chinese?
and can i only come for saturday or sunday in schooldays?(i'm still schooling)
thanks for taking notice ^^

23rd June 2008, 01:49 PM
There's a club at SMK St. John KL. Its a one of a kind thing.

Shinai is used for normal practice. Bokken used for kata and basic stuff.

Sorry to say but, no tamashigiri. (disappointing eh?) ;P

You don't need to be a member of Japan Club to join kendo. However, to park your car inside the Club you either need to be a member or get a security pass from the kendo admin people.

Saturday 4pm-6pm is for beginners, 6pm-8pm for advanced (but you can stay and watch/train. its your choice)

Wednesday 7pm-9pm for advanced (but you can go as well)

There is training on Sunday and Thursdays as well... but i'm not sure whether its basic/advanced.

tataxi
25th June 2008, 10:39 PM

It means i dont have to get security pass if i'm walking there?

Japanese? English? sorry to say i'm a chinese ... but speaks some english
so the language will be the only problem..

Elessar
26th June 2008, 01:22 AM
I walk there but I haven't had any problems with the guards before. They just let me pass. Well, mostly it is english and sometimes a little bit of Japanese. Just follow what others do and you'll be fine :P The new intake is in July if I am not mistaken.

jht
26th June 2008, 11:25 AM
Just tell the guard that u're going in for kendo if he asks. Or else just walk in. They shouldn't prevent you from going in if you say the magic word (kendo). Don't worry about language, most of the people can speak mandarin or cantonese.

@ Kenshi: Sorry, no club in Kuantan. Only Ipoh, KL, Penang, Sabah.

Elessar

tataxi: I am not too sure about Sunday but I think that's for advanced only ^^ You can contact Mr. Yap to enquire. He'll let you know about all the details. [You can ask him about Sunday too, if you want]. I, on the other hand, can only attend on Saturday and it's okay [just slower than the others :P] There's still training on Saturdays [just not this week's] Err... as for recovering... I don't think so.

kendomaya: There's a one time registeration fee of RM30, an insurance fee that I've forgotten the amount. I think it was RM17, if i had not mistaken. Also a one time thing. And if you are a student, the monthly fee is RM5 [RM10 if you are a working adult]. These, however, do not include the equipments that you need later on. :P As for the intake, there's one on July. Contact Mr.Yap to further clarify these things though... I might be wrong O.o

tataxi
28th June 2008, 09:37 PM

2. You can buy your own already I think. Well, I already had mine when I started out so I am not very sure on this one. Perhaps someone else can confirm on this. If not then you just gotta go ask on Saturday. :)
3. They are not too late yet. There are two intakes ^_^ Wed and Sat.
4. As for how long the shinai will last.......... someone else will have to tell you. XD I am still in the beginner level too *hides*

for saturday and wednesday there are different people training O.O
so is the course same or new things to teach everytime?

Evaleanst
7th July 2008, 02:54 AM
A shinai can last anywhere between 2 weeks, to a year and above.

It really depends on the quality of the shinai, frequency of usage, maintainence and your personal use.

I currently still have the shinai I first started using since last year. Just used it last week and it felt great. (Namely because it was a 38 size, when I've grown used to using 39)

Do remember to take good care of your equipment.

Cheers.

tataxi
7th July 2008, 07:23 PM
i wish i can come wednesday too, afraid i cant catch up
anyway there is size for shinai?
that means i have to measure my own height first before i buy one?
i just wish i can get my own shinai as soon as i can
so i can train at home...
by the way, after the satuday's training,

yama2
11th July 2008, 11:14 PM
Hi, a quick clarification. Insurance is paid on a yearly basis instead of one-off. The reason that it has not been collected for some time is (as I understand it) due to the senseis having paid on behalf of the club. I'm sure that Mr Yap will collect it soon.

Tataxi - you're expected to be properly attired for kendo. Wearing the gi and hakama doesn't mean that you're not a beginner. In Japan, you're not considered to be a "serious" kendoka until you reach 3rd dan so in a sense, we're all beginners until we hit 3rd dan. As to your question on the shinai, if you take care of your shinai, it should (on average) last you 1 year, depending on the frequency and intensity of your training.

Elessar
11th July 2008, 11:41 PM
Ooo now that cleared things up about the insurance. I remembered that he said it was a one time thing but perhaps I just heard it wrongly :P

Tataxi - Its a long story lol. Lets just say I started out at the wrong place.

@ Tataxi
From past experience, I don't think they have ever chased any beginners away from saturday practice regardless of it being 4pm or 6pm.... have you been specifically told to keep away? I don't think it is a problem if you want to join practice after the grading. You can always look for a sensei... or just watch. The problem is, nobody is sure when the grading will end... the record stands at 5pm+.

About shinai sizes, 39 is normally used by senior high school guys and anyone over 18... but it should not be a problem. When i started kendo at age 11 i used a 39 cause nobody had any other size. =p

And don't worry about "catching up" or anything. I was not in armour for a year. And even after armour, the senseis had me do nothing but basic basic. It is boring, but it pays.

tataxi
13th July 2008, 09:46 PM
thanks =D i feel more confident now
that means after the grading there is still training?
anyway i got my left foot's skin pell off during training yesterday
now some difficult to walk properly , hope it'll recover before saturday
it happens when the practice jumping back and strike when jump to front
(sorry cant remember the name cause too many japanese words, but i'll try my best)
is my footwork wrong? it wont hurt maybe if i do it properly
when i jump backwards and pull my shinai back, the power is just too great for my left foot...
anyway sorry for my attirement last time, just come from school
not much time to change
sorry, it wont happen again

jht
14th July 2008, 01:09 PM
Don't worry about attire. Just wear a T-shirt thats comfortable, and track bottoms. School jasmani shirt is ok... as long as its not muddy. Just don't wear your pyjamas. ;)

You skin will peel. Just try to make sure its peeling at the ball of your foot. If your left foot is peeling at the heel, means your footwork is abit wrong.

There is training after grading.... I'm not sure of the time though (cause I can't attend). =p

tataxi
14th July 2008, 07:29 PM
