Won't know until he returns!

He sent a little cellphone pictures of him at the budokan.
Was there a tournament there or something? Cuz it really looks like it's crowded with kenshi.

Hi KATSUJIN, you shared a room with Martin - me too!!

I also did keiko with Ishiida sensei, I was very fortunate to have that experience twice.

He also accepted an invitation for tea in our room, when he shared his wisdom with those who were awake (Hi Eddy!) for an hour or so.

Martin also did well in his grading exam and was promoted to 5th dan - well done!

If Martin was at the Nihon Budokan in Tokyo for a tournament, then it may have been at the 16th Youth Club Kendo Championships - I was there as well!
It was awesome to see kids as young as 6 years old doing such good kendo, using advanced waza to score yuko datotsu and behaving so maturely.

Fantastic.

Thanks for the update Kendoka.

That is good news to hear.

Hehehe, You should offer him shinpan flags, since he's now fifth dan, it's likely that he will judge a lot! (wich he did before)

If you want to see some pics of him and Awaga sensei, go to the IKF site and click on the pics link under The 2004 Kitamoto summer camp.

woaaaaah BRAVO MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!

You should offer him a felicitation keiko, where everybody goes on him to test his fifth dan.

Next step for Martin, is to make the national team, wich I think is really possible for him.

The seminar is generously sponsored by the All Japan Kendo Federation and the host, Gedatsu kai and is held at Kitamoto in Saitama.

To attend, you need to be nominated by your national kendo federation and then be accepted by the AJKF. Not all nominees are accepted as accomodation and dojo space is limited to about 50-60 people.

Accomodation and food are provided, so while you are there you have no basic expenses and you actually receive some Yen to assist with travelling to Kitamoto from the airport.

However you will need to get to Japan. Unless you are coming from a similar climate, I suggest that you also plan for up to about a week in Japan, prior to the seminar to acclimatise your body so you can get the most out of the 6 days of kendo.

This year was very hot and humid.

It is a great experience!

You have to apply through your national federation.

I also think, that you need to be at least sandan

Yes, but exceptions can be made, primarily if you are a lower rank who is in a teaching position. Also, only 2 people from each country can attend each year (sometimes 3, depending on how many applications they get overall).

Thanks..I've been interested in doing an exchange program with the Japanese Police (why not get a little Kendo too) but I keep hitting dead ends. I thought this could be an avenue for more info, seeing their police are top Kendo guys. I appreciate the feedback.

Yes of course!

Takashi was a member at Fudoshin, where I train, for his year or so in Melbourne.
We spent a bit of time together also comparing notes and we even managed a private hour or two with Ishida sensei together!
