Basic Equipment :
Shinai (sword for training), well in our dojo, its 140nis which is around, 35$
and i belive its very expensive.
Bokken (sword for kata), i dont know if you need it as a begginer, but in our dojo, its 60nis, which is, 15$ i think...
Hakama (Kendo Pants), i bought it in my country, 100% cotton, for 200nis, which is around 44.5$ but you can get it much cheaper in any Kendo online shops. such as kendoshop.com and etc...
Kendo Gi (Kendo Jacket), I ordered mine from kendoshop.com, waiting for it to arrive, costs 17$, for the most basic....
But be sure to check in your Dojo what you need first,
most dojos help the students to fund their equipment, basic equipment atleast.
hope i helped
and after that you'll need a bogu and then your poor like me :)

All prices here in USD.
You probably won't need to get anything if you're just joining a class for the first time. You'll just practice in whatever athletic wear you feel most comfortable in for the first few weeks. At most you'll be asked to get your own bokken ($15) and shinai ($25).
After that you get to wear the uniform. Hakama and keikogi vary widely in price and quality. I think you can get a decent beginner's set for around $100.
After some months of practice (2-6 months depending on dojo), you get to wear bogu (kendo armour). A well-established dojo will have old loaner bogus which it can loan or rent to you which you scrabble up enough cash to buy your own bogu.
Decent beginner bogus range between $400-$600, I think.
You can visit e-bogu.com for a nicely presented site with all the price tags. The beginner's equipment will be all the cheapest stuff. But don't buy anything yet until your sensei says you should.

I guess it was e-bogu.com. I forgot which site it was at, but I saw a site which is selling the complete kit (Bogu, Hakama, Keikogi) for around $400.

Kendoshop has good beginners equipment. I mean you can always make an uppgrade when you know your needs...
The address is: www.kendoshop.com (http://www.kendoshop.com/)
Well, I know it's located in Korea, but even with postage fees and such they have good prices. A keikogi and hakama costs about US$34, a shinai $15, bokken $12.
My club orders from this place.

PS. I don't know if you are a beginner, so no offence intended if you are not...
In any case kendoshop has equipment for all levels of practice and all price ranges.

Agree with Kaeda. I spent about $360 including shipping for 320 series from Kendoshop. Every other people including many senseis think I have spent about $6~700. Very good quality. Paint from men comes off but it is ok with me. For beginner, they are awesome...
