I just watched some old kendo videos from my Sensei's collection. I was blown away.
The documentary had old pre-war clips of Moriji Mochida, Kinnosuke Ogawa, Sasaburo Takano but to name a few.

It also had the kata demonstration with Saimura Goro and Mochida Seiji in the goodies page. The speed and aggression with which they fought was amazing. The entire show was in Japanese so I was lost in the narration but the old clips were pretty self explanatory. A bit weird seeing the shiai performed in front of Emperor Hirohito.

There was also demonstrations of naginata vs. katana (no bogu) and shiai ( I donnu what art) with bokken. They were fighting full-on with the bokken. I don't know how they didn't kill each other. And there was a short Jukendo clip with jukendo vs kendo.

Alex, Hamish, Hyaku have you seen this documentary?

Meng,
You should start distributing. qpuppy and are are probably not the only ones interested in seeing some vintage kendou videos. Incidentally, since they're of Japanese origin, would you mind asking your sensei the real distributor's identity? If we're really lucky, they might still be available here, in public libraries...

I'll be dubbing it. I will ask sensei about it later...there was this really weird program about this other kenjutsu art where they practice with bokken and only one of them has kote but these kote are huge. As in the padding is about 6 inches thick around the wrists.

Never seen anything like it.

Meng, that's Itto-ryu's unique Oni-kote... So that people practicing it can strike on the kote with a bokken full power.

Er, um, are those Kenjujtsu demo only?
Is it possible to fight (jikeiko-style) with a bokken??

It certainly looked like Jigeiko with bokken. The attacks were full on and with speed. The naginata bout was excellent. The lady fighting had such control, no bogu but after launching a blaze of strikes she stopped dead on top of her opponent's head.

I wish I could share this vid...:( sorry

Hey Meng, if you're really keen on sharing, you can send me the vhs and I can encode it digitally on my computer- I'll pay for the shipping and the tape if you're interested, and I can host the video off of my club's website for everyboyd to see- or even if you don't want to send it overseas, you should look at having it preserved digitally somehow, it'd be nice if future generations of kendo players could see some examples of pre-war/post war kendo, that stuff's pretty hrad to come by these days-
