Hi,

I was wondering if anybody could tell me what a first grading in kendo is like...
When i studied karate it would consist of kata (with an oral exam about the application of certain moves), an evaluation of basics form, and kihon.

I have not yet learned any kendo kata (if there is even such a thing).

I guess the reason i'm asking this is because i had a dream where my club had a surprise grading, and there was a crazy kata that we had to perform... i just followed along from someone beside me, and in the dream i was doing pretty damn good.

So what's a grading like and what is a beginner (no bogu) expected to know?

Yes there is such a thing as Kendo Kata, 10. 7 which beginners will ussally start to learn. They consist of a student side, and a teacher side. 1-7 consist of both sides have the long sword (bokken) and 8-10 consist of the teacher having the long sword and the student having the shorter sword that represents the wakizashi.
But to answer your question about grading, hell if I know, lol.

Take a look at the thread about Grading 6th kyu -2nd kyu.
There is no such thing as a surprise test. One signs up ahead of time to take a test.
